Turleys and Tennis

Harold Turley competed on the men's tennis team in 1962 & 1963. Since his years as a student-athlete, Harold and his wife Elaine of Salt Lake City have been wonderfully generous with the Men’s Tennis program.

“We wanted to assist the program that did so much for me when I was at BYU,” Harold explained.

In 2009, the Turleys established an endowed scholarship for men’s tennis. The scholarship was awarded to Cassidy Mears from Shawnee, Kansas.

“Yes, I’ve grown close to the Turleys,” Cassidy said. “And I really appreciate how cool it is to give back to a program like they do. It’s inspired me to go out and be successful, and then one day I’ll be able to give back to the BYU program like the Turleys have. I appreciate the Turleys a lot. They’ve helped us make our year just that much more special.”

“It’s been a great experience for Elaine and me,” Harold said. “We’ve really enjoyed getting involved with the players and coaches.”

“We feel strongly about helping to build the program,” said Harold. “We want it to be a Top 20 team.”

That goal is in sight. This year’s Men’s Tennis team recorded its best season since 1988 going 21-5. The Cougars were ranked as high as No.23 and received a bid to play in the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 1988.

Why My Wife and I Sponsor a Football Scholarship

by Bryan Kehl

Playing football for BYU was literally a childhood dream of mine. I’ll never forget where I was and what I was doing when I received that phone call with the offer for a football scholarship—the day my dream became a reality.

I loved every minute of my years at BYU, and would give almost anything for four more. Those days created fond memories I will hold for a lifetime. I appreciate now and appreciated then the tremendous privilege to attend this institution on a full athletic scholarship, realizing that “where much is given, much is required.”

I believe in that principle, and it was strengthened while at BYU. In 2008, my wife, Jessica, and I decided to join the ranks of the generous people who help make those scholarships possible by sponsoring a football scholarship. We plan to continue that support as long as we are able.

In life, most of us get so used to taking. I think it is important that we look for and take advantage of every opportunity to give back. That’s what I was taught growing up, what was strengthened at BYU, and what will govern the rest of my life: “Enter to learn, go forth to serve.”

Volleyball for the Jackman

Christie Carpenter, outside hitter for the BYU Women's Volleyball Team, with her scholarship donors, Brad and Vicki Jackman. Christie said, “BYU is a place like no other, and I can’t believe that I was lucky enough to come here and have all the experiences it has to offer. It means so much to me to be here, and that wouldn’t have been possible without the support of Brad and Vicki Jackman.” Christie hopes to one day pass on the love and kindness that the Jackmans have shown her.
