Dennis, a native of Mesa, Arizona, played three years of varsity baseball at BYU. As a senior, he was named All-Conference, All-District, and third-team All-American. His batting average reached .616 during his college career.

In 1965 Dennis received the Duane Fitzpatrick Memorial Award. In 1966 and 1967 he was chosen “Mr. Hustle” at BYU. Also in 1967, he was given the BYU Most Competitive Athlete Award and the Outstanding Senior Baseball Award.

1967 was a big year for Dennis. Along with his many awards, he was named a Riverside All-Tournament Selection and played on the Pan American Championship Team. He was named to the All-American college Baseball Team and was also a Collegiate District Seven All-Star Player.

Dennis majored in advertising and public relations during his four years at BYU. He is the father of five daughters, five sons and 37 grandchildren, and he is husband to Susan Pinkston.
