Bob Howard was one of the most consistent workers on all of the teams on which he participated. An active athlete at Jordan High School, Bob added his talents to many sports when he came to Brigham Young University. He participated in track, football, baseball, and basketball, and was captain of the basketball team. He was also playing manager of the Provo “Timps” of the Central Utah baseball league, and later became playing manager of the Magna Copper league baseball club. In 1925 he was awarded the Anderberg medal as the best all around athlete at BYU.
After graduating in 1927, Bob became coach at Murray High School. After four years in Murray he left to play baseball for the San Francisco Seals. When he returned to Utah he devoted his talents to his coaching position at Springville High School. Bob officiated in sports in the Rocky Mountain, Skyline, and Western Athletic Conferences for over thirty years.
He married D’Rilla Read on June 15, 1931, and they had five children - four boys and one girl.
