Born February 1978 in Los Angeles ... parents are Mike Vranes and Sally Ball ... distant cousin of U of U great Danny Vranes ... served an LDS Church mission to Oakland, Calif., ... recruited by Syracuse, Utah, Washington State and Tennessee ... recreation management major.

Before BYU

Prepped at Taylorsville High School ... lettered in basketball and volleyball, where he won the State Volleyball Championship ... named first team All-State in 1996 ... averaged 19 points, six rebounds, six assists and three steals per game .... coached by Steve Shoell (Southern Utah).


Vranes will miss the entire season because of a foot injury ... he had foot surgery in September after a spring injury failed to heal and needed an additional surgery in mid October ... he is a two-year starter who has played both the point and wing positions ... he was a medical redshirt during BYU's 1-25 season the year before Steve Cleveland's arrival ... a very explosive athlete, he has developed into perhaps the team's top perimeter defender ... his size and athleticism have helped him be an effective scorer and rebounder from the guard line ... a returned LDS Church missionary, he primarily played point his freshman year and wing last season until the final eight games of the year.

1996-1997 | Redshirt Year

Played in just two games before being injured ... received a medical redshirt ... played his first game of the season vs. San Diego State and had five points and four rebounds in 22 minutes ... scored nine points, pulled down three rebounds and made

1998-1999 | Freshman Year

Vranes averaged 10.9 points, 3.1 rebounds and 2.9 assists during his freshman season in 1998-99 ... He Adapted well while played point guard most of the season despite being a more natural shooting guard ... Vranes led BYU in scoring in two games, including a career-high 21 point effort in a win over Utah State .... He led the team in rebounding in one contest, pulling down seven boards at Washington State ... Vranes led the team in assists with 80 on the year and averaged nearly six assists per game over the final four games of the season, including an eight assist performance in the WAC Tournament upset of TCU ... He scored 20 points in an overtime loss to Arizona ... Vranes hit 41.7 percent of his three-point attempts to lead the team and shot .433 from the floor and .650 from the line.

1999-2000 | Sophomore Year

Vranes was third on the team in scoring (8.0 ppg) and second in assists (2.7 apg) ... totaled 136 rebounds, second on the team, while averaging a team third-best 4.1 caroms per contest ... one of three players to start all 33 games (also Wesley and Lyday) ... made a trey in 22 games and 37.4 percent from behind the arc ... scored double figures in 12 games (BYU was 10-2 in those games) ... played wing most the year but started at the point in the final eight games (BYU 6-2 in those games) ... in the NIT, he had 10 points and 5 rebounds at Notre Dame, 13 points, 6 rebounds and 5 assists vs. Southern Illinois and was one off his season high with 14 points, and 5 assists vs. Bowling Green ... in the MWC tournament, he held Utah's Tony Harvey to 2 points and 1 assist and smothered UNM's high scoring Lamont Long defensively ... had 10 points (4-5 FG, 2-3 treys) at Wyoming and scored 12 points with a team-high 7 rebounds and 3 assists, 2 steals and 1 block vs. UNLV ... had 7 points and game-high 6 assists vs. UNM but no rebounds for the first time all year ... had 12 points at SDSU ... fighting the flu, he went 0-3 and did not score for the first time in his career at Air Force ... had a team-high 7 rebounds vs. CSU with 11 points ... had 11 points, 5 rebounds, 5 assists against UC Irvine ... matched a career high with a team-best 9 rebounds at UCSB along with a team-high 3 assists ... scored 8 of his 12 points in overtime for win at Florida International ... had 10 points, 6 rebounds and a season-high 7 assists vs. South Carolina State and a season-high 15 points along with 5 rebounds vs. Weber State.
