Before BYU

High School - As a tailback-halfback at Bonneville High, Clay set rushing and scoring records for the Tigers ... voted athlete of the year ... all-state ... All-American mention ... school honor roll for two years ... also lettered three years in track ... state sprint champ in 100 and 220. 

1975 | Freshman Year

Alternated between JV and varsity as a freshman ... rushed for 552 yards in the first two games of the season with JV ... carried five times for 13 yards with varsity and one TD against Utah.

1976 | Redshirt Year

1977 | Sophomore Year

Had a stint at defensive back with JV corps, but returned to running back in a game with Snow College ... tallied 180 yards in five kickoff returns, scored two touchdowns, had one pass interception and three TD-saving pass deflections, plus the game saving tackle on the one-yard line - all against the Badgers in a 32-27 victory.

1978 | Junior Year

Ran kickoff returns for varsity in 10 games ... total was 22 returns for 450 yards and a 20.5 average ... in three games he carried the ball as a running back or pass receiver.
