Parents are Galen and Rosemarie ... brother, Dan, is tailback for Boise State .. majoring in wildlife management.

Before BYU

High School - Had a great career at Borah High ... could have been successful in nearly any sport, but stuck with football and baseball ... was all-City in Boise, all-state in Idaho as running back ... coached by Delane Pankratz (Idaho State).



1973 | Freshman Year

Recruited by assistant head coach dave Kragthorpe .. burst onto the scene the last half of his freshman year ... rushed for 87 yards and two TDs in a heavy snow storm at Utah ... ended up with 301 yards on 61 carries (4.9 average), three TDs.

1974 | Sophomore Year

Led the team in nearly every performance category )kicking, returns, rushing, pass receiving, scoring) ... in 199 carries he gained over 839 yards (4.2 average) and scored ten TDs ... caught 32 passes for 442 yards ... missed two games (Iowa State and Air Force).

1975 | Junior Year

 Ranked with early rushing leaders (162 yards per game after two games) ... in CSU game which was televised regionally, Jeff carried 33 times for 179 yards, fumbled twice ... was named outstanding offensive player of the game ... also WAC offensive player of the week ... best yardage effort came in game with Wyoming, when Jeff carried 36 times (one short of school record) for 215 yards and three touchdowns (158 yards in first half) in sub-freezing weather at Laramie ... saw little action in ASU game because of flu ... shin injury in Arizona game limited him to 69 yards ... re-injured ankle ... carried only twice in So. Miss game for zero yardage ... but he finished season with 984 yards on 216 carries (4.6 average), scored 11 touchdowns ... caught 15 passes for 148 yards ... a unanimous choice for official all-WAC first team ... named to all league selections in area in 1975 ... LaVell says he could be the finest back the school has ever had ... totally dedicated and unrelenting in his assignments.

1976 | Senior Year

All-America honorable mention, Associated Press ... All-Western Athletic Conference first team ... set BYU record for career rushes (625), touchdowns (29), points scored (174), yards rushing (2,718).
