Before BYU

At Mesa High he was McDonald's Player of the Year...all-conference for two years and all-state...in wrestling he was all-conference and all-state and runner-up Arizona Prep Champion at 191...football coach was Ben Arredondo (Arizona State).

1979 | Sophomore Year

Made 25 tackles in varsity action...also saw time with the jayvee...intercepted a pass against Weber State when he started in place of the injured Glen Redd...primarily was a backup to Redd throughout the season...saw limited action in the Holiday Bowl.

1980 | Junior Year

Named coaches' player of the game against Utah State and Wyoming...injured his neck against UTEP and consequently missed the remainder of the season.
