Before BYU

  • While playing for Grace M. Davis High, Michael compiled a 60-3 record
  • Won the Northern California Valley singles championships in 1977 and 1978
  • Graduated from high school with honors, earning a 3.8 GPA
  • Transferred to BYU from Canada College in California where he had a 20-5 record in doubles play
  • Was Northern California JC doubles champ and a finalist in the U.S. Amateur Hardcourt Championships


  • Ranked 28th in 21-and-under singles in the country
  • Placed second in WAC doubles and competed in the NCAA tournament with Rich Bohne
  • Was 19-12 in singles and 17-13 in doubles in 1980-81
