In high school, Bob was named the most outstanding athlete at Bloomfield Hill High. He also received the Detroit News Award as the most outstanding high school track athlete in Michigan.

At BYU, Bob competed in the 880, mile, two-mile, 3000-meter steeplechase, and relay events. He received the 1967 Kenner Kartchner Award as the highest rated trackman by the NCAA. He received the 1967 and 1968 Most Inspirational Trackman Award from his fellow BYU teammates. During his senior year he received the Wayne B. Hales Award, and attended school on a full scholarship as the recipient of the BYU Scholar-Athlete Award. Bob was the 1966 NCAA All-American Champion in the 3000-meter steeplechase. He was 1967 WAC Cross-Country Champion, and 1968 WAC Champion in the one-mile, three-mile, and 3000-meter steeplechase. He participated in the 1968 and 1972 AAU Championships and the 1968 and 1972 U.S. Olympic Trials.

Bob married Argene Rose Bartoli in 1971 and received his B.S. degree from BYU in geology in 1969.
