The Top Performers of the Week feature highlights the top athletes of each sport currently in play. Check back each week to see which athletes are standing out in Cougar sports.

Max Hall - Football - Sophomore; Mesa, Ariz.

Sophomore quarterback Max Hall completed 34-of-57 attempts for a career-high 537 yards passing against Tulsa. His yardage total tied Ty Detmer for the ninth highest single-game total. Detmer racked up 537 yards against Washington State during the 1989 season. John Walsh holds the record with 619 yards against Utah State in 1993. Interestingly, Halls' yardage total also marks the most yards passing in a loss since Detmer and the Cougars dropped a 46-41 shootout against Washington State in 1989. John Walsh also holds the school record for most yards passing in a loss, falling to Utah State, 58-56, in the 1993 shootout. By halftime, Hall had completed 24-of-41 for a career-best 344 yards and three touchdowns. Hall also had two interceptions, including one that was returned for a touchdown. Hall did not have a turnover in the second half.

Jessica Harmon-Carter - Soccer - Junior; Provo, Utah

Harmon-Carter, a Provo, Utah, native, was the anchor for BYU's defense over the weekend. She leads one of the three Division I teams in the nation that have not allowed a goal in the 2007 season. In two games this week, Harmon-Carter helped hold opponents to only three shots on goal, compared to BYU's 12. The Cougars' five straight shutout victories to begin the season is also a school record.

Katie Larkin - Soccer - Senior; Draper, Utah

Larkin, a native of Draper, Utah, scored the game-winning goal in both of BYU's contests over the weekend. In the Cougars' 1-0 victory vs. Long Beach State, Larkin had four shots on goal but ultimately capitalized on a penalty kick to give her team the win. Against Wisconsin, she split three defenders and buried a left-footed goal from 25 yards into the far post for her third goal of the season.

Erica Lott - Women's Volleyball - Senior; Orem, Utah

Cougar rightside hitter Erica Lott recorded double-digit kills in both of BYU's matches over the weekend, including a season-high 22 in the Cougars' five-game comeback victory at San Diego State. With BYU trailing two games to zero and 25-24 in game three, Lott recorded three straight winners to give BYU a lead it would not relinquish enroute to a 30-26 game-three win. Lott then came up big with three kills in game five to seal the match for the Cougars. Her 22 total winners ties Chelsea Goodman for the most kills tallied by a BYU player in a match this season.

Stephan Shay - Men's Cross Country - Junior; East Jordan, Mich.

BYU junior Stephan Shay finished in first place among the college runners, completing the 6,000-meter race in a time of 18:09.48. Shay, a transfer from Michigan State, beat Central Arizona runner Tyson David by nine seconds. The Cougars battled the 100-degree weather to get the team victory as well. Shay has now finished in first place for BYU in both races of the season.
