Marchand Continental Championship Cup

Aug 18, 2009 - Posted by Kyle Chilton at 9:11 am | Updated: November 14, 2011 12:31 pm | Permalink

Jonathan Tavernari and the Brazilian Senior National Team will open play at the Marchand Continental Championship Cup today against Argentina at 4 p.m. MT. Visit tournament page for updated information including the schedule for the week and results.

Congrats to Tavernari for making the team for the second-straight summer—as the only non-professional. This summer's accomplishment may be more impressive considering the 2009 roster includes two NBA players—Leandro Barbosa of the Phoenix Suns and Anderson Varejao of the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Getting Ready for the Season

Aug 18, 2009 - Posted by Melissa Lake Wright at 9:10 am | Permalink

Hey Cougar fans! I hope everyone is getting ready for this year’s upcoming season! Things are looking great at this point. We have been blessed with a great new coaching staff and some talented new (and old) faces. This week has consisted of practice, treatment, food, more treatment and more practice. Then we top it all off with a good night’s rest and recuperation to get ready for the next day. This week has been tough, we can all attest to that. Our bodies are getting pushed to their limits, but it has been very rewarding. We are learning so much from our coaches both on and off the court. We are looking forward to bringing home the conference championship this year!

Tuesday night was the Cougar Kick-Off. It was great to see all of our fans out on the soccer fields showing their love and support. With all of your cheering and support, we are ready to begin the season.

Hope to see you at all of our games! Go Cougars!

Thursdays Hero Returns

Aug 14, 2009 - Posted by Carey Hoki at 7:17 pm | Updated: May 2, 2011 3:35 pm | Permalink

After this evening's practice the team recognized its first Thursdays Hero of the 2009 season, even though it is Friday.

Today's honoree was seven-year-old Cameron Evans from West Valley, Utah. A year ago Cameron had 20-50 vision. In only a 12-month span his vision has worsened to 20-600 due to juvenile macular degeneration.

As the team gathered to welcome Cameron, wide receiver Parker Mangum and tight end Andrew George stepped forward to present gifts. He was also asked to sign the team flag which is carried onto the field before every game.

First Chat of Fall Camp

Along with the start of fall camp comes the first online player chat of the 2009 season. Our first chat will be with senior offensive lineman RJ Willing on Tuesday at 1:30 p.m.

Heading into his senior season, RJ has seen action in 29 games, with nine starts, since his freshman year in 2004. He has been become a regular at center for the first-team offense since spring ball earlier this year.

We plan to have two chats per week during fall camp, scheduled at 1:30 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Fans will have an opportunity to submit questions in the days and minutes leading up to the scheduled chat, and can watch as the featured player submits his answers live on www.byucougars.com.

Questions for RJ may be submitted by clicking on the chat icon located in the Information Zone of the football homepage. Questions will be accepted before and during the live chat. Check back regularly for upcoming chats.

Cougars in Europe Update

Aug 12, 2009 - Posted by Kyle Chilton at 5:36 pm | Permalink

This is old news but it highlights a BYU great. At the 2008 Euroleague Basketball Final Four 50 legends of the previous 50 years of European club basketball were honored on center court. BYU's own Kresimir Cosic (1948-1995) was one of the players honors for his contributions as a player and coach. Check out a video of his daughter talking about Cosic.

Lee Cummard's signing with Alba Berlin was also announced on the Euroleague website.

In other European news, former Cougar Trent Plaisted has signed to play with BC Zadar. Plaisted played part of last season in Italy but returned to the states due to an injury. He played this past summer with the Detroit Pistons in the NBA Summer League in Las Vegas.

Zadar is the same team Cosic played for and the team's arena is named after Cosic.

Our season has started! The time has come for double days, new practice gear, and all you can eat Cannon Center. We got started early on Friday morning with pictures. With all of us dolled up, we took individual and team photos over by the waterfall underneath the bell tower on campus. We then each did an interview for our new team Facebook page telling a little bit about our personal lives (be sure to add us as a friend and check them out)! The day proceeded with a series of meetings to set our season off right.

We met with everyone from our wonderful trainers to the hardworking compliance office, who make sure that we are all eligible to play within the NCAA. We also met with our Associate Athletic Director, Janie Penfield, who gave us a presentation on the Athletic Department and NCAA banned substances. Sandy Thomas, our academic advisor, also met with us to help us set our team G.P.A. goal for this next semester and make sure we are all on track towards graduation and being eligible. After we met with the all the awesome people that keep our team going strong, we had a team meeting to get us all set up for our season.

To finish off our first day, we headed to the training room to get our physical exams done. The next day we went to Helaman Halls to play volleyball at a function put on by BYUSA. We played with awesome people from the community and freshman living in the dorms. On Sunday, one of our new coaches, Chris McGown, invited the team over to his lovely home in Midway for dinner. If there is one thing we love to do as a team, it’s eating.

Monday marked the first day of practice for our 2009 season. There is no other feeling like playing in the Fieldhouse and we are so happy to be back! Although we had a competitive, high energy and constructive first practice, the excitement died afterward for the freshman when they learned they would experience part of their initiation. With approval from our head trainer, Gaye Merrill, the newcomers dipped all the way under in the cold pool, where the water is about 50 degrees Fahrenheit. Welcome to the team!

Although we had a setback during our practice on Tuesday with a routine fire drill, we are making great progress in the gym and we are thrilled to be back. Go Cougars!

Cummard in Germany

Lee Cummard has reported to camp for Alba Berlin. He was featured by the Berliner Morgenpost (in German of course) so take a look. Anyone else out there think we should put chain nets up in the Marriott Center?
