BYU head coach Dave Rose along with senior guard Tyler Haws and junior guard Kyle Collinsworth talked with the media before on Tuesday to preview Wednesday's Deseret Duel rivalry game with Utah. The game will be televised on ESPNU at 7 p.m. MST. Quotes from coach Rose, Haws and Collinsworth follow.
What sticks out about Utah's team:
"Their numbers are really good: their shooting percentages from two, from three, the rebounding numbers. They have a deep rotation. They've got a lot of guys that come in and play in their system. They've got (Delon) Wright, (Brandon) Taylor and (Jakob) Poeltl all three of those guys are really good offensive players and they have good shooters to go with them.
"It's a complete team. They have good size, good depth and they have a real purpose in how they play."
Excitement for the game:
"It's one of those situations where we have a good opportunity to have a nationally-ranked team come in our building. Those are always great nights and great days when you're preparing for that and then you add the fact that its one of your in-state rival teams, so there should be a lot of energy in the (Marriott Center) tomorrow."
"I always felt, especially on the recruiting trail and outside of the actual game itself, that the Utah basketball program was someone that was really seriously hard to deal with when you get into those battles. They have so much tradition and they've had so much success, it's always going to be a struggle to try and compete with them and we had a nice little run there on the floor and it helped us a lot in some of those off-the-court wars."
Keys to winning:
"Rebounding is a huge key. They're very, very good. Their fours and fives are very good offensive rebounders. We'll have to do a good job trying to keep them away from the glass."
"The pace of play will be an issue and hopefully we can get up and down a little bit. Transition will be a big part of this thing. As will, being able to control their point guard, he's a guy who can take over games and hopefully we can find a way to keep him under control."
"The great thing about this game is it's about the fans. We get so many fans from both teams and it's just (a great) atmosphere."
Key to winning:
"I think we just have to play our game and that's the biggest thing. Just play our game, play at our tempo, do what we normally do and use the crowd and the energy to our advantage."
"I'm excited there's going to be a lot of emotion, lots of fans, high energy and both teams want to win, so it's going to be fun."
On a sellout:
"There's nothing like when the Marriott Center is full. I think it's one of the best, if not the best in the country when it gets rocking. I've loved every second of it when the fans are right there, it almost feels like a sixth man on our team at times."
