BYU loses first game at home 77-72 to Pacific

BYU scored five unanswered points at the beginning of the second half. A three from Jakob Hartsock and a bucket from Nick Emery put the Cougars up 41-36 with 16:57 to play. After an inbound play that led to an easy layup for Kyle Davis, BYU went cold, going scoreless from the field for six minutes. Emery ended the drought with a layup at the 10:26 mark to put the Cougars back up 50-49.

The last 10 minutes of the game were physical on both sides with the lead changing between them. After Pacific took the lead with five minutes to go, Emery made three clutch free throws to tie it up 59-59 with 4:28 to play.

The Tigers scored five unanswered points to go up 64-60 with three minutes left. A basket from Davis got his team within two, 64-62, but free throws from Pacific kept BYU at bay. The Cougars missed six-straight free throws down the stretch, allowing the Tigers to widen the gap.

In the last minute, Chase Fischer was a perfect 14 of 14 from the free-throw line to keep BYU in the game. However, Pacific made its free throws to keep the game out of reach and hold on to the 77-72 upset.

Fischer tallied 23 points, 14 of which came from the charity stripe. Davis had 21 points to go with his five rebounds. Emery had 13 points and Kyle Collinsworth had nine points, 12 rebounds and four assists.

BYU up 34-32 over Pacific at the half

After starting 1 of 4 from the field, BYU made five-straight field goals to go up 16-9 with 15:37 on the clock. A trey from Jakob Hartsock and a three-point play from Kyle Collinsworth aided the Cougars in that run.

The Tigers got hot, making 6 of 8 to take the 21-20 lead with 10:42 to play. A 3-pointer from Chase Fischer put BYU back up 23-21, but a couple of baskets from Pacific put BYU down 26-23 with 6:28 to go in the half.

Kyle Davis scored two buckets in a row to get the Cougars back ahead by one, but the Tigers kept fighting to take the lead. Fischer drilled a pair of threes to put BYU up 34-32 with 1:32 to go until the break. The half ended with a big block from Davis to keep Pacific from tying it back up.

Davis led BYU in the first half with 11 points and three rebounds. Fischer also had 11 points points, including three 3-pointers. Collinsworth filled out the stat sheet with five points, six rebounds and four assists.

Cougars complete halftime comeback to surge past first-place Gaels 70-59

An inbounds layup from Kyle Davis helped BYU tie the score at 39-all coming out of the first timeout of the second half.

Kyle Collinsworth later completed an old-fashioned 3-point play to give his team the 44-41 advantage, the first Cougar lead since the 3:27 mark of the first half.

BYU took a 9-point lead with 11:38 to play on a Collinsworth assisted Chase Fischer 3-pointer. Fischer then converted a pair of shots from the charity stripe to give the Cougars their first double-digit lead at 58-48 with just over eight minutes remaining in the game.

Saint Mary’s stayed in the game, however, cutting the BYU lead back to single digits, 64-56, around the four minute mark.

The Cougars kept their momentum despite a late-game surge from the Gaels, completing the 70-59 comeback win.

Fischer led the team with 19 points while Collinsworth added 17, a game-high nine boards and seven assists.

Cougars down 37-33 at the half

BYU and Saint Mary’s traded baskets to start the first half, with the Cougars going up 5-2 on shots from Kyle Collinsworth and Chase Fischer with a minute gone.

A deep 3-pointer from Jakob Hartsock gave the 10-6 lead back to the Cougars at the 15 minute mark.

After two quick Saint Mary’s baskets, Fischer hit two jumpers, including a shot from deep, that put BYU up 15-12 with 14 minutes to play in the first.

Fischer knocked down another three to give the Cougars a 23-21 lead with nine minutes left in the half.

Jumpers from Nate Austin, Collinsworth and Kyle Davis then put BYU up 29-25 at the five minute mark.

Saint Mary’s went on a 12-4 run to end the half, setting the score at 37-33 for the Gaels. Fischer led all scorers with 13 points on 4-of-9 shooting. Collinsworth finished the half with six points, four rebounds and four assists.  

Cougars end losing streak to Waves with 88-77 victory

The Waves started the second half the same way they did the first, on a 6-0 run to pull within two. Collinsworth put an end to the run with a steal and ensuing dunk at the other end. At the first timeout at 15:56, the Cougars led 58-56.

BYU regained a comfortable advantage at 71-58 over the next four minutes thanks to scores from Collinsworth and Fischer, and four Pepperdine turnovers. The Cougars went just one for its next five attempts, but were able to maintain a 10-point lead of 75-65 with 8:58 to go.

At the final media timeout in regulation at 3:26, BYU led 82-73 with Fischer scoring the Cougars' last seven points. The Waves would not threaten again as they struggled to score, finishing the night making only two of their final 14 shot attempts from the field.

Collinsworth jumped into first place on the BYU all-time rebounding list with his board at the 0:54 mark.

BYU beat Pepperdine by a score of 88-77. Collinsworth led all scorers on the night with 24 points to go along with 10 assists and four rebounds. Emery chipped in 17 points and Fischer had 15. Davis scored 11 points and had eight boards, Kaufusi had 10 points and six rebounds, and Hartsock finished with nine points and four boards.

BYU leads Pepperdine 53-45 at the half

Pepperdine started off the game on a 6-0 run before Kyle Collinsworth got BYU on the board with a driving layup. Collinsworth accounted for each of the Cougars' first seven points on the night. Kyle Davis also chipped in a 3-pointer as the Waves had a 14-10 advantage at the first media timeout, 15:21.

Corbin Kaufusi threw down a nice dunk soon after the timeout, and he knocked down a pair of free throws to give BYU its first lead of the game, 19-17 with 13:16 to play in the first half. Collinsworth shook his man with a crossover down the lane for a score to put the Cougars up five, 25-20 with 11:12 left. BYU made nine straight shots, including all of its free throws, from the 19:26 mark until a Nick Emery missed 3-pointer at the 11:02 mark.

Noah Hartsock sunk threes on back-to-back offensive trips to extend the lead to eight, 31-23, at the 9:26 mark. He made his third in as many tries two possessions later. BYU held a 36-28 lead with 7:10 to play.

BYU went on another hot shooting streaking, making seven straight field goals over the next five minutes, highlighted by a 3-pointer from Chase Fischer and a layup from Jordan Chatman. The Cougars led 50-39 with 2:19 left. At the half, BYU led 53-45.

Collinsworth paced the Cougars on offense with 13 points along with eight assists and a rebound. Emery had 10 points, Hartsock had nine points and Davis had eight points and four rebounds. BYU shot 63 percent from the field in the half.

BYU beats LMU 87-62

Chase Fischer opened up the second half with back-to-back 3-pointers to extend the lead to 44-24 after just one minute of play. BYU went on an 8-0 run over two minutes to make the lead 52-32 with 15:06 to play. Kyle Davis scored six of the eight points in that run.

Corbin Kaufusi scored three baskets in a row for the Cougars, including a breakaway dunk and a three-point play that made the lead 70-50 with 7:53 left in the game.

Kyle Collinsworth followed up his first half dunk with a breakaway slam at the 7:30 mark that aided in eight unanswered points for BYU, making it 75-50. After the Lions scored a basket, the Cougars answered with another 6-0 run to hold them at bay.

A layup with less than a minute to go from Davin Guinn sealed the 87-62 win.

Five BYU players scored in double figures in this win. Davis led the team with 19 points with Fischer right behind him with 17 points, four assists and a career-high six rebounds. Kaufusi added 12 points and two blocks coming off the bench, going a perfect 5 for 5 from the field. Collinsworth had 11 points, eight assists and five rebounds, while Nick Emery had 10 points and four assists.

Cougars lead LMU 38-24 at the half

BYU got off to a slow start, allowing Loyola Marymount to score eight unanswered points, including two dunks. A tough layup made by Kyle Davis at the 17:24 mark ended the run. Chase Fischer drilled a three to close in on the lead, 8-5.

A three from Jakob Hartsock tied the game at 15-15. Another 3-pointer, this time from Nick Emery, gave BYU its first lead, 18-15, with 9:09 to go in the half.

The Cougars went on an 18-2 run to push their lead to 30-17. The run was highlighted by a huge dunk from Kyle Collinsworth that drew the foul for the three-point play.

BYU closed out the half on a 6-2 run that included two perfect trips to the charity stripe from Fischer and Collinsworth. The Cougars have a 38-24 lead going into the break.

Davis leads BYU in scoring with 10 points. Zac Seljaas and Nate Austin each have five rebounds to lead the Cougars. Collinsworth has nine points, three rebounds and four assists.

Cougars down Dons 102-92

Three early fouls for the Dons gave the Cougars six quick points, putting them up 57-47 in the first minute of second half play.

Tim Derksen's 3-pointer brought the Dons within seven, but Nick Emery hit a 3 from the left corner and Chase Fischer added a breakaway layup to give the Cougars a 62-50 lead with 15:57 to play.

San Francisco's 3-point play brought them within nine, but Fischer's 3-pointer with 15 minutes to play gave them a 12-point advantage again. The two teams traded baskets for the next four minutes, until the Dons scored two straight layups to cut BYU's lead to nine with 11:21 to play. Derksen hit a 3-pointer from the right side to bring San Francisco within six, but Jordan Chatman's 3-pointer took the Cougars' lead to 75-66 with 9:30 to play. 

Zac Seljaas' 3-pointer put the Cougars up 78-68 with 8:30 to play in the game. San Francisco responded with two straight layups to bring the lead within six, but a Kyle Davis layup and a Fischer 3-pointer gave BYU an 83-74 advantage with 6:45 to play.

Seljaas hit another 3 to put BYU up by 10 with six minutes to play. The Dons hung with the Cougars for the next two minutes, but Emery's 3-pointer from the left corner put the Cougars up 93-80 with four minutes to play. A combination of strong defense and offense for the next four minutes allowed them to close the game out 102-92. 

Fischer led all scorers with 25 points and Seljaas ended the night with 20 points and five rebounds from the bench. Emery had 21 points and five rebounds and Kyle Collinsworth had 13 points, seven assists and four rebounds. Davis also added 14 points and nine rebounds to BYU's winning efforts. 

Cougars hold 51-45 lead over Dons at break

Teams traded baskets to open up the first half of play with the Cougars tying the game at 5-all on a driving layup by Nick Emery. With 15 minutes to go in the half, Chase Fischer and Emery hit back-to-back 3-point field goals to give BYU the 16-13 advantage.

At the 9:07 mark, USF garnered its largest lead of the game so far, 28-23, off of a layup by Nate Renfro. The Cougars then went on an 8-3 run fueled by two Zac Seljaas 3-point baskets. With 4:13 to go in the half, BYU took the 40-37 lead forcing a San Francisco timeout after two consecutive fastbreak layups by Kyle Collinsworth.

With 2:14 to go, Collinsworth stole the ball in the USF backcourt for the dunk to give BYU the 47-44 lead. The Cougars took a six-point lead into the halftime break.

Seljaas led all scorers going into the break with 14 points, going 5 of 7 from the field. Nate Austin had a game-high five rebounds, and Fischer and Collinsworth both dished out three assists apiece.
