Mavericks defeat Cougars 105-89 in first round of NIT

UT Arlington opened the second half with two scores to extend the lead to 12 and BYU trailed 67-56. TJ Haws sank a 3-pointer at the 18:02 mark for the Cougars' first score of the half to cut the lead down to nine. The Mavericks went on a 7-1 run before Eric Mika sank a pair of free throws and the Mavericks held a 76-65 lead at the 13:32 mark. On the following UTA possesion, Nick Emery came up with a steal and knocked down a three in transition, cutting UTA's lead to eight and bringing fans to their feet.

The Mavericks pushed the lead back out to 13 after a 7-2 run and led 83-70 with 11:08 remaining. After another basket by UTA, Emery knocked down a 3-pointer and hit a free-throw to complete a four-point play and BYU trailed 85-74 at the 8:44 mark. A pair of free throws from Yoeli Childs cut the lead to nine but the Mavericks answered with two baskets to pull ahead 89-76. The Mavericks then went on a 13-3 run and hit the century mark to take a 102-79 lead. 

With 2:26 left in the contest, Colby Leifson knocked down a 3-point basket. On the next posession, Leifson converted the first of two free throws before knocking down another long ball and the Cougars trailed 102-86. After the Mavericks responded with a deep ball of their own, Leifson made another 3-point shot for his tenth point in the final two and a half minutes and the Cougars fell 105-89. 

Mavericks lead Cougars 62-55 in high-scoring NIT first half

After UT Arlington opened the game with a 5-0 run, Eric Mika knocked down a jumper to start the scoring for BYU. A jumper by Davin Guinn and two baskets from Yoeli Childs kept the Cougars within striking distance and UTA built a 13-8 lead with 17:16 remaining in the half. Nick Emery beat his man to score his first basket of the night and added a 3-pointer a few possesions later and BYU cut the lead to two. The teams traded baskets before Mika threw down a fast break dunk and added a pair of free throws to tie the score at 19 at the 12:54 mark. 

The Mavericks knocked down a basket from behind the arc, but TJ Haws answered for BYU with a 3-pointer to tie the score at 22. The Mavericks scored once more to retake the lead but Mika drew a foul on the following possesion and knocked down a pair of free throws to even the game once again. A quick 8-0 run put UTA ahead 32-24 with 10:10 remaining in the half. 

The Cougars fought back with a 9-2 run that included made free throws from Mika and Emery and BYU trailed 34-33 at the nine minute mark. Emery continued the scoring to keep BYU close and hit a long ball to tie the game at 38 with 7:31 left in the half. The Mavericks answered with back-to-back 3-pointers and a 6-4 run despite a pair of layups from Mika to take a 44-42 lead. TJ Haws scored next for BYU with a 3-point basket from long range and a pair of free throws from Mika tied the score at 47 with 4:16 to go before half time. 

The Mavericks knocked down two 3-pointers in the final three minutes of the half to put together a 14-7 run and the teams headed into the break with UT Arlington leading 62-55. 

Gaels outdistance Cougars in second half to secure 70-57 victory

Out of the break Yoeli Childs scored first for the Cougars and two buckets from Eric Mika cut the Gael's deficit to nine. Saint Mary's responded with a 14-2 run to build a 62-40 lead by the 9:31 mark. On the next possesion Haws sank a jumper to lower the deficit to 20 but Saint Mary's held tight to the lead. With 8:40 remaining, Childs hit a jumper to make the score 66-44 but two baskets by the Gaels extended the Gael's lead to 25, the Gael's largest margin of the evening.

After two more scores from Mika, the Cougars came up with several offensive rebounds and a put-back effort by Elijah Bryant cut the lead to 19 with three minutes remaining. On the following Cougar possesion, Nick Emery made a hard drive before dishing it off to Childs for a dunk and scored a basket of his own a few possesions later to help the Cougars cut the lead down to 15 with 1:30 left in the contest. In the final minute of play, Colby Leifson spotted up in the left corner and sank a three for the final Cougar basket of the evening and the Cougars fell by the final score of 70-57.   

Mika finished the evening leading all Cougar scorers with 18 points and adding five rebounds. Childs also had a stellar evening with 14 points and seven boards while Emery led the team with four assists in addition to pulling down six rebounds. 

Gaels hold 41-30 advantage over Cougars at half

Yoeli Childs opened the scoring for the Cougars with a free throw and a jumper by Erik Mika put the Cougars ahead 3-2. The teams continued to trade baskets, fighting to control the lead until the Gaels established an 11-7 lead near the 15 minute mark. The Cougars stormed back and took a 12-11 advantage after an and-one by Mika but Saint Mary's responded with a 5-0 run. Elijah Bryant sank a three-pointer with 12:34 remaining in the half to keep BYU within striking distance and the score at 16-15 in favor of the Gaels. 

The Gaels extended the lead to eight after a 10-3 run but BYU responded quickly with a pair of free throws by Mika, an electrifying shot-block by Haws and another long ball by Bryant to cut the deficit to three with 6:10 to go until the half. Saint Mary's found the basket on back-to-back possesions to push the lead to nine but a three from Haws made the score 32-26. After two more baskets by the Gaels, Haws kept the Cougars going offense again with a layup drive at the 2:40 mark. Childs found the bucket in the final minute of play but a Cougar foul on the next possesion gave the Gaels three free-throws and at half the score was 41-30 in favor of Saint Mary's.

Cougars defeat Toreros 82-70

Nick Emery recorded the first five points of the second half for the Cougars before a TJ Haws 3-pointer increased BYU’s lead to 55-41 with 15:37 left. Eric Mika’s perfect trip to the charity stripe capped off an 11-3 run to help the Cougars maintain a comfortable 69-52 margin with eight minutes left in play.

Despite San Diego’s efforts to fight back, the Cougars overpowered the Toreros on offense. San Diego managed to end the game on a dunk as BYU claimed an 82-70 victory.

Emery was the first of five Cougars to score double-digit points with 26. Mika logged a double-double of 15 points and 10 rebounds as Elijah Bryant contributed 15 points of his own. Yoeli Childs and Haws each recorded 12 points. BYU tallied 15 points off turnovers while holding San Diego to just six. The Cougars also handled the Toreros in the paint 28-18.

TJ Haws nailed a 3-pointer to get the game rolling for the Cougars before the Toreros answered with baskets on the next three possessions. A Nick Emery trey helped BYU regain control of the game, sparking a 16-2 run to build a 24-13 advantage with nine minutes on the clock. The Cougars continued to dominate, leading by as many as 18, as Emery made his fifth 3-point shot of the game.

The Toreros turned up the offensive power as they began to chip away at the Cougar lead. BYU went cold on the floor for over five minutes as San Diego cut the deficit to five. Haws launched a shot from beyond the arc at the buzzer to send the Cougars into the locker room leading 45-38.

Emery led the Cougar offense with 17 points, including a perfect 5 of 5 from the arc. Yoeli Childs contributed 10 points and four rebounds while Mika tallied eight points and three rebounds. 

Cougars down Pilots 73-62

Yoeli Childs scored on BYU's first possession out of halftime. TJ Haws then hit a 3-pointer on the next trip down the floor to cut Portland's lead to one, 34-33. BYU then went on a 5-0 run to take the 38-34 lead. 

Assisted by Nick Emery, Eric Mika finished the 3-point play to give the Cougars the 46-39 lead with 12:33 on the clock. The Pilots then went on a 9-1 run, retaking the lead 48-47. Portland extended its lead to five, 56-51. With 4:28 to go, Davin Guinn hit a trey to bring the Cougars within three, 61-58. Mika then hit three straight free throws to tie the game at 61-all. BYU then scored four quick points fueled by two big defensive stops.

The Cougars finished the game outscoring the Pilots 12-1. Mika finished the game with a game-high 23 points and 12 rebounds. Childs also ended the contest with a double-double, recording 15 points and 10 rebounds.

Pilots lead Cougars 34-28 at halftime break

Teams traded baskets through the first four minutes of the contest with the game tied at 8-all before the first media timeout. Eric Mika scored six of the Cougars' eight points. Portland then outscored BYU 14-6, making the score 22-14 with 8:14 to go in the half. 

On a pass from Elijah Bryant, L.J. Rose converted the 3-point play to bring the Cougars within five, 28-23. A Yoeli Childs bucket at the buzzer cut the Portland lead to six 34-28.

Mika led the Cougars with nine points and four rebounds, while Childs also recorded nine first half points along with four rebounds. 

Cougars fall to Bulldogs 85-75

TJ Haws scored the Cougars' first bucket out of break, giving him eight points for the game. At the 17:38 mark, Eric Mika finished a jumper in the lane. Nick Emery then picked off a pass and found Haws upcourt for the fast-break trey. With the 3-point field goal, BYU cut the Gonzaga lead to 12, 45-33, forcing a Bulldog timeout. 

With 16:06 to go, Mika sank two free throws, bringing the Cougars within eight, 45-37. The Zags then went on an 11-3 run, increasing their lead to 16. Davin Guinn scored a quick five points to again put the Cougars within 13, 58-45, with 12 minutes to go. Teams then traded baskets until the eight minute mark, before Haws hit two back-to-back 3-pointers to bring BYU within eight points, 66-58. 

Elijah Bryant converted the three-point play at the 4:49 mark, bringing BYU again within eight. Gonzaga then went up 11, before BYU brought it within six with under two minutes to play. With free throws, the Bulldogs extended their lead to 10 before the final buzzer sounded. 

Cougars trail Zags 42-26 after first half action

Yoeli Childs gave BYU its first two points of the contest after a 4-0 Gonzaga start. Elijah Bryant hit a trey at the 14:54 mark to put the Cougars within one, 9-8. The Zags then went on a 11-2 run backed by two 3-pointers by Josh Perkins. Gonzaga extended its lead to 17, 29-12, as Nigel Williams-Goss sank a pair of three throws. 

BYU cut the lead to 14, 34-20, as Eric Mika converted the three-point play. His spin move and contested finish gave him six points for the game with 5:06 to go in the first half. Gonzaga then extended its lead to 19, 40-21, with 1:29 to go in the half. The Cougars cut into the Zags' advantage, 42-26, going into the break, down 16.
