Collinsworth and Fischer pace BYU in first half against Gonzaga

BYU headed into halftime down 38-34 to Gonzaga.

Chase Fischer and Kyle Collinsworth led the Cougars with nine points each while Nick Emery chipped in eight. BYU shot 30 percent, including 7 of 20 from three, while Gonzaga’s shot 58 percent from the field with 5 of 10 behind the arc.

Gonzaga led 9-6 at the 15:30 media timeout after making its four of its first six attempts from the floor. A three by Emery on BYU’s first possession along with a Collinsworth trey kept the score close for the Cougars.

BYU pulled ahead 14-12, using a flurry of turnovers by Gonzaga to get the edge. Zac Seljaas and Fischer each had threes before the Zags tied it just before a media timeout at 11:21.

Gonzaga used a Cougar scoring drought to take the lead, but BYU sparked a 10-3 run for a 24-18 advantage at the 7:46 mark. Emery and Collinsworth each had five points on the stretch.

The Zags pulled ahead with a 13-2 run from 8:43 to the 2:56 mark to lead 31-26 as BYU went 1 of 9 during that span.

With the tally 36-31 in favor of the Bulldogs, Fischer hit two free throws and converted a four-point play to cut the margin to 36-34 with 50 seconds left in the half.

Collinsworth's triple-double fuels Cougars' 99-81 victory over Portland

BYU didn't make a field goal in the first two minutes of the half which allowed Portland to cut the lead to 55-40, forcing a Cougar timeout. Nick Emery put a stop to the slow start seconds after play resumed with a made jumper. Kyle Collinsworth assisted on a Jordan Chatman 3-pointer just over a minute later, and with the assist Collinsworth broke the BYU single-season record for assists.

Portland went off from 3-point land near the midway point of the half to cut the lead to 76-60. Two 3-pointers from Zac Seljaas pushed the BYU lead to 82-64 at the 7:56 timeout. 

Collinsworth collected his 11th career triple-double at the 5:39 mark when he grabbed his 10th rebound of the contest. He then sprinted down the floor and found a cutting Emery who dunked it home to force a Portland timeout with BYU leading 89-70 with 5:23 to play. The Pilots would never threaten again as BYU ran away 99-81.

Collinsworth led the way by extending his own NCAA record for career triple-doubles with 14 points, 10 rebounds and 16 assists. Collinsworth tied the BYU single-game record for assists. Chase Fischer led all scorers with 21 points to go along with four rebounds and a pair of assists. Emery totaled 18 points, four rebounds and four assists. Chatman had a career-high 13 points, Kyle Davis scored 11 points, and Seljaas had 10 points and five assists.

BYU leads Portland 53-32 at the break

Portland got off to a 5-0 lead to start the game before Kyle Collinsworth got BYU on the board with a layup while being fouled. The Cougars made four of its next five field goal attempts to tie the game at nine at the first media timeout. After trading baskets over the next two minutes, the Cougars grabbed a five-point lead, 18-13, thanks to a 3-pointer from Chase Fischer and a Nick Emery layup.

BYU went on a 7-0 run to take a 27-17 lead with 7:23 remaining in the half. After the media timeout, Jordan Chatman made 3-pointers on back-to-back possessions to force a Portland timeout with BYU up 33-17. The Cougars extended the lead to 42-24 with just over three minutes to play thanks to some hot shooting and a Portland cold spell.

The Cougars ended the half leading 53-32 after shooting 53 percent from the field.

Emery leads all scorers at the break with 13 points while Fischer is right behind with 12 to go along with four rebounds. Collinsworth filled the stat line with 10 points, seven rebounds and eight assists. Chatman also chipped in eight points.

 

Cougars finish Toreros 91-33

At the 18:31 mark of the second half, Nick Emery hit his second 3-point field goal of the game to give the Cougars the 44-12 lead. BYU then extended its lead to 39, 53-14, on a bucket by Kyle Davis

With 9:51 to go, Nate Austin dished it off to Kyle Collinsworth on the baseline for a layup. Collinsworth had 12 points in the game.

BYU increased its lead to 46, 72-26, fueled by five straight points by Davin Guinn. With 4:58 to go, Jamal Aytes then hit a baseline jumper to extend the lead to 48, 76-28.

The Cougars finished the contest shooting 56.5 percent from the field, while the Toreros shot 25.9. BYU had 43 points from the bench to San Diego's 15. The Cougars outrebounded the Toreros 49 to 28 and finished the game with 25 assists, and San Diego had five. Emery led all scorers with 17 points, nine rebounds and five assists.

Cougars take the 39-11 lead into halftime

The Cougars started the game on an 8-0 run, forcing a quick San Diego timeout. BYU then proceeded to score five more quick points before the Toreros scored their first points of the contest. At the 11-minute mark, the Cougars led the USD 18-2.  With 8:21 to go in the first half, Kyle Collinsworth extended the BYU lead to 21 as he finished a breakaway dunk.

Nick Emery scored his eighth and ninth point on a finger-roll layup in the lane at the 7:19 mark. Emery led all scorers with nine points at the break. He also had a game-high seven rebounds going into the half. The Cougars finished out the half outscoring the Toreros 11-5 to take the 39-11 lead into the break.

BYU shot 45.7 percent from the field in the 20 minutes of play to San Diego's 16.1. The Cougars dished out 12 first half assists, while the Toreros had two, and BYU had six points off of turnovers to San Diego's two.

BYU loses first game at home 77-72 to Pacific

BYU scored five unanswered points at the beginning of the second half. A three from Jakob Hartsock and a bucket from Nick Emery put the Cougars up 41-36 with 16:57 to play. After an inbound play that led to an easy layup for Kyle Davis, BYU went cold, going scoreless from the field for six minutes. Emery ended the drought with a layup at the 10:26 mark to put the Cougars back up 50-49.

The last 10 minutes of the game were physical on both sides with the lead changing between them. After Pacific took the lead with five minutes to go, Emery made three clutch free throws to tie it up 59-59 with 4:28 to play.

The Tigers scored five unanswered points to go up 64-60 with three minutes left. A basket from Davis got his team within two, 64-62, but free throws from Pacific kept BYU at bay. The Cougars missed six-straight free throws down the stretch, allowing the Tigers to widen the gap.

In the last minute, Chase Fischer was a perfect 14 of 14 from the free-throw line to keep BYU in the game. However, Pacific made its free throws to keep the game out of reach and hold on to the 77-72 upset.

Fischer tallied 23 points, 14 of which came from the charity stripe. Davis had 21 points to go with his five rebounds. Emery had 13 points and Kyle Collinsworth had nine points, 12 rebounds and four assists.

BYU up 34-32 over Pacific at the half

After starting 1 of 4 from the field, BYU made five-straight field goals to go up 16-9 with 15:37 on the clock. A trey from Jakob Hartsock and a three-point play from Kyle Collinsworth aided the Cougars in that run.

The Tigers got hot, making 6 of 8 to take the 21-20 lead with 10:42 to play. A 3-pointer from Chase Fischer put BYU back up 23-21, but a couple of baskets from Pacific put BYU down 26-23 with 6:28 to go in the half.

Kyle Davis scored two buckets in a row to get the Cougars back ahead by one, but the Tigers kept fighting to take the lead. Fischer drilled a pair of threes to put BYU up 34-32 with 1:32 to go until the break. The half ended with a big block from Davis to keep Pacific from tying it back up.

Davis led BYU in the first half with 11 points and three rebounds. Fischer also had 11 points points, including three 3-pointers. Collinsworth filled out the stat sheet with five points, six rebounds and four assists.

Cougars complete halftime comeback to surge past first-place Gaels 70-59

An inbounds layup from Kyle Davis helped BYU tie the score at 39-all coming out of the first timeout of the second half.

Kyle Collinsworth later completed an old-fashioned 3-point play to give his team the 44-41 advantage, the first Cougar lead since the 3:27 mark of the first half.

BYU took a 9-point lead with 11:38 to play on a Collinsworth assisted Chase Fischer 3-pointer. Fischer then converted a pair of shots from the charity stripe to give the Cougars their first double-digit lead at 58-48 with just over eight minutes remaining in the game.

Saint Mary’s stayed in the game, however, cutting the BYU lead back to single digits, 64-56, around the four minute mark.

The Cougars kept their momentum despite a late-game surge from the Gaels, completing the 70-59 comeback win.

Fischer led the team with 19 points while Collinsworth added 17, a game-high nine boards and seven assists.

Cougars down 37-33 at the half

BYU and Saint Mary’s traded baskets to start the first half, with the Cougars going up 5-2 on shots from Kyle Collinsworth and Chase Fischer with a minute gone.

A deep 3-pointer from Jakob Hartsock gave the 10-6 lead back to the Cougars at the 15 minute mark.

After two quick Saint Mary’s baskets, Fischer hit two jumpers, including a shot from deep, that put BYU up 15-12 with 14 minutes to play in the first.

Fischer knocked down another three to give the Cougars a 23-21 lead with nine minutes left in the half.

Jumpers from Nate Austin, Collinsworth and Kyle Davis then put BYU up 29-25 at the five minute mark.

Saint Mary’s went on a 12-4 run to end the half, setting the score at 37-33 for the Gaels. Fischer led all scorers with 13 points on 4-of-9 shooting. Collinsworth finished the half with six points, four rebounds and four assists.  

Cougars end losing streak to Waves with 88-77 victory

The Waves started the second half the same way they did the first, on a 6-0 run to pull within two. Collinsworth put an end to the run with a steal and ensuing dunk at the other end. At the first timeout at 15:56, the Cougars led 58-56.

BYU regained a comfortable advantage at 71-58 over the next four minutes thanks to scores from Collinsworth and Fischer, and four Pepperdine turnovers. The Cougars went just one for its next five attempts, but were able to maintain a 10-point lead of 75-65 with 8:58 to go.

At the final media timeout in regulation at 3:26, BYU led 82-73 with Fischer scoring the Cougars' last seven points. The Waves would not threaten again as they struggled to score, finishing the night making only two of their final 14 shot attempts from the field.

Collinsworth jumped into first place on the BYU all-time rebounding list with his board at the 0:54 mark.

BYU beat Pepperdine by a score of 88-77. Collinsworth led all scorers on the night with 24 points to go along with 10 assists and four rebounds. Emery chipped in 17 points and Fischer had 15. Davis scored 11 points and had eight boards, Kaufusi had 10 points and six rebounds, and Hartsock finished with nine points and four boards.
