Cougars top Chippewas 98-85

Teams traded baskets through the first part of the second half making the score 54-54 at the 14:21 mark. BYU then pulled ahead 65-57 behind three 3-pointers and a layup by Zac Seljaas.

With 10 minutes to go in the second half, Central Michigan's Josh Kozinski hit his sixth 3-point field goal of the game to bring the Chippewas within five, 65-60. Seljaas responded with his sixth 3-pointer on the night to go up 70-60, giving Seljaas a career-high 20 points for the game.

The Chippewas cut the Cougar lead to five, 77-72, with six minutes to go. BYU extended its lead to nine, 81-72 behind a pair of free throws by Chase Fischer.

The Cougars went up by 11 on a made free throw by Collinsworth at the 2:40 mark. BYU then extended its lead to 13 on a layup by Seljaas with under two minutes to go.

Five Cougars finished the game in double figures with Seljaas leading all scorers with a career- and game-high 25. Seljaas finished the game shooting 7 of 9 from the 3-point line. Collinsworth recorded his eighth career triple-double and his second of the season finishing the contest with 12 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists. Chase Fischer added 23 points, while Nick Emery chipped in 12. Kyle Davis scored a BYU career- and season-high 20 points to go along with six rebounds and four assists.

The Cougars dished out 26 assists to the Chippewas 18, and BYU pulled down 37 rebounds, while Central Michigan recorded 34. BYU turned the ball over just six times, while Central Michigan gave the ball away 11 times.

Cougars and Chippewas tied 44-44 at break

BYU opened up the game on a 4-0 run behind a 15-foot jumper by Kyle Collinsworth and two made free throws by sophomore center Corbin Kaufusi. After two Chippewa baskets, the Cougars extended their lead to eight, 13-5, on a 3-point field goal by Chase Fischer.

At the 10:44 mark, Central Michigan cut the lead to two, 18-16, on a made 3-point basket by John Simons. BYU then extended its lead back to five, 21-16, on a 3-point field goal of its own by Zac Seljaas.

Behind a Nick Emery layup and another Seljaas trey, the Cougars pulled ahead 26-18 with seven minutes to go in the half.  Central Michigan then went on a 9-3 run, making three 3-pointers on three straight possessions, to cut the deficit to two, with the score 29-27 in BYU's favor.

With three minutes to go in the half, the Chippewas tied the game at 35-all and then took their first lead of the contest, 38-36. Teams went into the break tied at 44-44.

After 20 minutes of play, 18 3-point field goals were made between both teams, with the Chippewas shooting 50 percent and the Cougars 44.4 from behind the arc. Emery led all BYU scorers with 12 points at the break, while Collinsworth finished the first half with five points, a game-high seven rebounds and a team-high five assists.

Cougars up on Aggies 39-24 at halftime

The Aggies opened up the game with back-to-back 3-pointers, and Kyle Davis responded with back-to-back layups to make it 6-4. A block from Corbin Kaufusi and a layup by Jake Toolson tied the game at 6-6 with 17 minutes to play.

The teams traded layups for the next two minutes, keeping things even throughout. Kaufusi's layup at 14:30 gave BYU its first lead of the night, 12-10. The Aggies quickly tied it back up with a layup of their own. 

Chase Fischer hit two 3-pointers to give the Cougars a 18-14 lead with 12 minutes to go. Nate Austin and Kyle Collinsworth both had blocks for BYU as defenses kept either team from scoring for three minutes. Nick Emery's 3-pointer ended the scoreless drought and put the Cougars up 21-16 with 9:30 to play in the first half. Davis added a layup to make the score 23-16 before an Aggie timeout.

Collinsworth hit a fade-away jumper to extend BYU's lead to nine. Jalen Moore ended the Aggie's four-minute scoring drought with a 3-pointer. Twenty seconds later, Emery hit a 3 from the left corner, making the score 28-19. Collinsworth blocked an attempted Aggie layup with seven minutes to play, keeping BYU's lead at nine points.

Fischer's 3 with 5:40 to go gave BYU its largest lead to that point, 31-20. Utah State hit a pair of free-throws and a layup to bring itself within seven with five minutes to go. 

Collinsworth hit a layup and added a free-throw to take the Cougars lead to 12, 36-24. 

The Aggies went 0 for 10 over the last two minutes, while the Cougars added three free-throws to go into halftime with a 39-24 lead.

Davis had 10 points and seven rebounds, leading all players in both categories. Fischer had nine points and Emery had six points. Collinsworth had eight points, six rebounds and three assists going into halftime. BYU shot 50 percent from beyond the arc and its defense had six blocks. Lew Evans led all Aggies in scoring with seven points.

Cougars beat Wildcats 73-68

BYU got off to a hot start in the second half, going on a 9-2 run to push its lead to 48-39 after a breakaway layup by Jake Toolson. Nate Austin drilled a jump shot with 14:48 on the clock to give the Cougars their first double-digit lead of the game, 53-42.

A putback layup from Austin ended a scoring drought of over two minutes for BYU, making it 61-49 with 8:40 to play in the game. Fischer ended another drought of over two minutes with a 3-pointer, keeping Weber State at bay.

Kyle Collinsworth scored five points for the Cougars over the span of three minutes, but the Wildcats were able to claw their way back into the game. With 0:51 left, Zac Seljaas made one free throw to make it 70-63. 

Collinsworth sealed the win with two free throws with 10 seconds left, making the final score 73-68.

Fischer had a career-high four steals to go along with his team-high 21 points (3 treys). Collinsworth had his third double-double of the year with 13 points and 10 assists. He also grabbed four boards. Kyle Davis had 15 points and 7 rebounds in the contest.

BYU leads Weber State 39-37 at half

For the first four minutes of the game, the two teams traded points bucket for bucket, neither team able to go on a run. With 15:48 on the clock, a 3-pointer from Jake Toolson sparked the team to go on a 9-0 run. A baseline-layup from Chase Fischer capped off the run, extending BYU’s lead to 18-12.

Weber State got back in the game, going on a 7-0 run to take back the lead at 24-22. Kyle Davis muscled his way for a bucket in the paint to tie it back up at 24-24 with just under nine minutes to play.

Fischer drilled another trey to close in on the Wildcats’ lead, making it 35-31 with 4:23 on the clock. With 1:26 left in the half, the Cougars took back the lead after Fischer stole the ball and drove for a layup.

Both Fischer and Davis had 10 points in the game, leading all scorers. Kyle Collinsworth has six points and seven assists. Davis leads all rebounders with five.

BYU pulls out 95-81 win over Belmont

Chase Fischer started the second half for the Cougars by taking the ball to the rim. He was fouled on the shot, and made one of two free-throws to put the Cougars down 42-41 with 19:40 to play. Corbin Kaufusi added a layup off a rebound to put the Cougars ahead 43-42 with 19 minutes to play. Belmont's Tyler Hadden converted both of his free-throws on the next possession to give the Bruins the lead again, 44-43.

Nick Emery found Kyle Collinsworth on an alley-oop with 18:35 to go to electrify the Cougars and give them a 45-44 lead. Kyle Davis added a layup to extend the Cougars lead to three before a Belmont timeout. Belmont added five points in a minute to go up 49-47, but back-to-back 3-pointers from Emery gave the Cougars a 53-51 lead with 16:15 remaining. 

The teams traded baskets for the next two minutes until the Cougars pulled away with a six-point lead off of a Fischer 3-pointer. The 59-53 lead for the Cougars was extended on a 3-point play from Collinsworth, giving BYU a 62-53 lead.

BYU was 9 of 9 from the floor for four minutes of this half, including three Fischer 3-pointers. Its streak would end when Collinsworth missed a layup. He got his own rebound and put away the second layup, giving the Cougars a 70-56 lead with 11:24 to play. 

A 3-pointer from Fischer with 9:47 to play gave the Cougars a 73-58 lead. Craig Bradshaw responded for the Bruins with a 3 of his own to make it 73-61 with 9:15 to play. Jamal Aytes responded with a layup to keep the their double-digit lead, 75-65.

Collinsworth hit a six free-throws in three minutes to take the Cougars' lead to 13 points. Emery's pair of free-throws gave them a 83-68 lead with 5:39 to play. A 3-pointer from Fischer extended their lead to 18 with five minutes to play.

Dylan Windler made a 3-pointer with 2:58 to play, narrowing the Cougars' lead to 15. Mercer would bring the score within 11 with a 3-pointer, but a pair of free-throws from Emery would keep their lead at 13. Emery took a pass from Collinsworth with a minute to play to put BYU up 93-78. They would hit a pair of free-throws to end the game 95-81.

The game saw 10 lead changes between the two teams, and four Cougars hit double digits in scoring. Collinsworth had a double-double with 26 points, nine rebounds and 10 assists, and also was 8 for 10 in the free-throw category. Davis had his third double-double on the season with 11 points and 14 rebounds. Emery had 27 points and Fischer added 19 points, all of them coming from 3-pointers or free-throws. Belmont's leading scorer was Craig Bradshaw, who scored 26 points in the game and shot 9 of 12 from the floor.

BYU trails Belmont 42-40 at half

After Kyle Collinsworth took the ball to the rim after winning the tip to start the game, the Cougars went 0 of 7 during a scoring drought of three minutes until Kyle Davis scored on a putback with 16:20 to play, making it 5-4 for Belmont. 

Craig Bradshaw stepped up early for the Bruins, scoring two 3-pointers in the first five minutes of the half to add to their 8-4 lead. After a timeout, Davis added a layup to narrow Belmont's lead 8-6. Belmont's Burton Sampson responded with a layup of his own. A dunk from Davis and a layup by Nick Emery tied the score at 10 with 13 minutes to play. Emery went coast-to-coast 15 seconds later, giving the Cougars their first lead of the night, 12-10. 

After the Bruins timeout, Bradshaw responded with back-to-back 3-pointers to give Belmont the lead 16-12 with 11:20 to play. Taylor Barnette's 3-pointer and Bradshaw's layup put the Bruins up 21-12 with 10 minutes to play.

Belmont went 6 of 6 on their shots for two minutes while completing a 15-2 run. Emery ended the Bruins's run with a 3-pointer with nine minutes to play, and Collinsworth's three-point play 15 seconds later started a 6-0 run for BYU in just over a minute. Tyler Hadden's 3-pointer ended the Cougars' run with 7:35 to play, giving Belmont a 28-20 lead.

Emery's two 3-pointers put the Cougars within four with 5:20 to play, and Collinsworth added a layup to bring the game within two with 4:48 to play. Strong defense for the Cougars gave Collinsworth another layup and tied the game at 30-30 with 3:53 to play. After a Bradshaw layup, Jake Toolson pulled up for the 3-pointer that gave the Cougars the lead with 3:21 left in the first half at 33-32. However, Bradshaw would hit a 3-pointer 30 seconds later to give Belmont the lead again 35-33 with 2:50 to play.

The teams traded layups for a minute before Toolson made a 3 to make it 39-38 for Belmont. Mack Mercer responded with his own 3-pointer for the Bruins with 40 seconds to play. The Cougars would get the last possession of the half, but Jake Toolson couldn't convert the half-court shot.

Emery ended the half with 13 points and a pair of rebounds. Collinsworth had 13 points, four assists and two rebounds, and Davis added six rebounds to the Cougar effort in the first half. Belmont's Craig Bradshaw had 19 points and four rebounds, and was 7 of 9 from the floor.

Cougars hold off Delta Devils 75-68

Mississippi Valley came out strong in the second half, getting within five of BYU, 46-41. The Cougars got four quick points from the bigs after Corbin Kaufusi got the bucket and the foul and then Kyle Davis tipped in the missed free throw. Those four points put BYU up 50-41 with 17:44 to go in the game.

Neither team was able to go on a big run in the second half. Kyle Collinsworth scored back-to-back buckets to make it 56-49 with 12:56 to play.

On the inbound pass, Emery got a quick bucket with 8:05 remaining to make it 67-56. Aside from free throws, the Cougars did not make a basket for over seven minutes, allowing the Delta Devils to get within striking distance. With 43 seconds left, Emery found Davis wide open for the dunk to make it 73-66, holding off MVSU. The final score was 75-68.

Emery led BYU in scoring and assists by scoring 18 and dishing out seven assists. Collinsworth scored 11 points and grabbed eight rebounds in the win. Nate Austin and Davis added seven rebounds to the team's total of 41. Davis and Kaufusi scored in double figures with 13 and 12, respectively.

BYU leads Mississippi Valley 44-32 at the half

Chase Fischer drilled a 3-pointer to get the offense rolling for BYU. The Cougars then went on a 7-0 run to go up 10-2 over the Mississippi Valley Delta Devils early in the first half. A three from Nick Emery at the 18:01 mark capped off the run.

A 12-0 run over a little over two minutes extended BYU’s lead to 22-5. The run was made up of five points from Corbin Kaufusi, four points from Kyle Davis and another 3-pointer from Emery. The Delta Devils answered back with seven unanswered points before Fischer nailed another trey to stop the run and push the lead to 26-12 with 10:37 left in the half.

After trading points for a few possessions, Mississippi Valley went on another run, this time an 8-0 run. With 5:29 to go until halftime, Zac Seljaas hit a 3-pointer to stop the run, making the BYU lead 33-21.

The Cougars ended the half with a 9-0 run before the Delta Devils hit a 3-pointer right before the buzzer. BYU led 44-32 going into the break.

Emery led all scorers at the half with 13 points, including three treys. He also dished out a game-high five assists. Kyle Collinsworth led the team in rebounds with five to go with his four points.

BYU wins season-opener against UVU

The Cougars got going right away in the second half with Kyle Davis scoring in the paint. After going scoreless for two minutes, a 3-pointer from Jake Toolson ended the drought, extending the lead to 53-31 with 15:58 left in the game.

BYU went on an 8-0 run sparked by back-to-back blocks from Davis. With 11:02 remaining, a steal from Kyle Collinsworth set up Chase Fischer for the trey to make it 67-35.

Three different freshmen, Nick Emery, Jordan Chatman and Jakob Hartsock, scored in a one-minute period to push the lead to 80-48. BYU went on to win 85-54.

In his first game as a Cougar, Davis had a double-double with 17 points and 20 rebounds. Fischer led all players with 20 points, including three treys. Collinsworth filled out the stat sheet with 17 points, nine rebounds and seven assists.

BYU had 69 rebounds, the most in a game in Dave Rose’s time as a head coach.
