Fischer leads BYU to 80-77 win over Virginia Tech

The Cougars didn’t score a field goal until the 18:32 mark  in the second half when Chase Fischer got things rolling for the team, scoring a layup to push the lead to 42-38. After gaining early momentum, BYU was scoreless for two and a half minutes and did not score a field goal for five minutes. Finally ending the streak, a 3-pointer from Zac Seljaas put the Cougars up 50-47 with 12:33 on the clock.

For three minutes, the only points BYU scored outside of the charity stripe was a fast break layup from Kyle Collinsworth set up by Jordan Chatman, which made Virginia Tech’s lead just one at 57-56 with 9:34 left to play.

After trading the lead multiple times, Fischer scored nine points in a row for the Cougars, six of which came from beyond the arc. His steal for the easy layup put BYU up 77-73 with 3:02 remaining.

Virginia Tech scored again, making it 77-75. Turnovers and missed shots in the last few minutes of the contest built up the intensity and kept BYU up front. Fischer hit free throws down the stretch to seal the win.

Fischer led all scorers with 24 points, including four 3-pointers, and six rebounds. Collinsworth had 18 points and 10 assists for another double-double. Nick Emery and Seljaas also scored in double figures with 10 and 11 points, respectively.

BYU leads Virginia Tech 38-34 at the half

Both teams got off to a slow start with the first point being scored at the charity stripe by Kyle Davis with 18:17 on the clock. Back-to-back threes from Chase Fischer and Nick Emery sparked the offense, getting them up from 7-0 with 17:20 to play in the half.

The Cougars went on an 8-2 run to push the lead to 20-11 with 11:29 until the break. The run included another 3-pointer from Emery after Fischer hustled to keep the ball away from defenders and dished it to Emery.

BYU got a little sloppy, turning the ball over four times, which allowed Virginia Tech to go on a 7-0 run to tie the game for the first time at 24-24. A hook shot from Davis ended the run, giving the Cougars back the lead at the 6:24 mark.

The Hokies kept fighting, however, taking their first lead with under four to play. The two teams traded the lead twice before threes from Fischer and Zac Seljaas gave the Cougars a 38-34 lead heading into the break

Collinsworth led the team with 10 points, seven assists and three rebounds. Fischer and Emery both added six points in a balanced scoring effort against Virginia Tech.

Cougars down Blazers 97-79 in opening game of the NIT

Out of the break, BYU struggled to get something going. UAB went on a 9-1 run to close in on the 58-47 lead. After making five 3-pointers in the first half, the Blazers made were 5 of 7 from beyond the arc in just the first eight minutes of the second half.

Zac Seljaas sparked some life into the Cougars’ offense with a three at the 15:02 mark to push the lead back to double-digits, 61-50. However, sharp shooting from UAB brought the lead back to single digits, getting the lead down to 65-61 with under 12 minutes to play.

With 10:21 left to play, Nick Emery stole the ball to get the layup, sparking the crowd. After Seljaas drilled another 3-pointer, Kyle Collinsworth got another bucket to cap off a 6-0 BYU run, pushing the lead back to double digits, 77-66, with 9:12 on the clock.

Chase Fischer propelled the team, scoring five of six buckets, including four 3-pointers, to blow the lead back open for the Cougars, extending it to 94-72 with four minutes to play and forcing a timeout for the Blazers.

BYU would hold on to the lead, taking the 97-79 win. Fischer led BYU in scoring with 27 points, including seven 3-pointers. Collinsworth recorded his 12th triple double with 19 points, 12 assists and 10 rebounds. Nick Emery had 22 points and five assists in the win.

BYU leads UAB in first half of NIT first round

The Cougars got to work fast in the first half with Kyle Davis scoring five quick points, including a 3-pointer at the 19:16 mark. Back-to-back threes from Chase Fischer pushed BYU on a 9-0 run, making it 11-2 with 17:03 left in the half.

With under 14 minutes to play, Kyle Collinsworth stole the ball and found Nick Emery on the breakaway. Collinsworth got down the court in time for Emery to set him up with an alley oop, allowing Collinsworth to throw it down. At the 11:49 mark, he dunked again, putting the Cougars up 25-12.

For five minutes, BYU and UAB traded buckets, neither team able to go on a run. Four consecutive baskets from the Cougars were split between Emery and Fischer, leading the way for the team. Capped off by two-straight from Corbin Kaufusi, BYU went on a 6-0 run to extend its lead to 41-26 with 2:54 left in the half.

BYU ended the half on a 10-2 run, including a 3-pointer with four seconds left in the half to go into the locker room with a  51-30 lead over UAB.

Emery led all scorers in the first half with 17 points on 7 of 10 shooting, including three treys. Fischer added 11 points with three 3-pointers of his own. Collinsworth had six points, six rebounds and nine assists in the half.

BYU falls 71-68 to Gonzaga

A Gonzaga offensive foul gave BYU another chance with 3.5 seconds left, facing a two-point deficit. The Cougars couldn’t capitalize in the eventual 71-68 loss.

A Fischer 3-pointer from the top of the key brought the Cougars within two, 70-68, with 1:05 on the clock.

Both teams experienced scoring droughts in the early part of the half as the Zags extended their lead to 10. The Cougars cut the difference to five, 50-45, with free throws by Collinsworth and Seljaas and a Fischer jumper at the 11:58 mark.

Gonzaga stretched it to a 12-point lead with 9:57 left. Two buckets by Fischer cut the score to 60-52, forcing a timeout by the Zags with 7:42 to play.

BYU closed the deficit to within three with pairs of free throws by Corbin Kaufusi and Collinsworth before Emery hit a 3-pointer with 5:55 on the clock.

Three Gonzaga baskets made it a 66-59 game, but Seljaas hit a corner three to bring BYU before Corbin Kaufusi’s free throw brought the game within three just after the 2:34 media timeout.

Fischer led BYU with 18 points while Collinsworth had 15 to go along with 15 rebounds and eight assists.
 

Collinsworth and Fischer pace BYU in first half against Gonzaga

BYU headed into halftime down 38-34 to Gonzaga.

Chase Fischer and Kyle Collinsworth led the Cougars with nine points each while Nick Emery chipped in eight. BYU shot 30 percent, including 7 of 20 from three, while Gonzaga’s shot 58 percent from the field with 5 of 10 behind the arc.

Gonzaga led 9-6 at the 15:30 media timeout after making its four of its first six attempts from the floor. A three by Emery on BYU’s first possession along with a Collinsworth trey kept the score close for the Cougars.

BYU pulled ahead 14-12, using a flurry of turnovers by Gonzaga to get the edge. Zac Seljaas and Fischer each had threes before the Zags tied it just before a media timeout at 11:21.

Gonzaga used a Cougar scoring drought to take the lead, but BYU sparked a 10-3 run for a 24-18 advantage at the 7:46 mark. Emery and Collinsworth each had five points on the stretch.

The Zags pulled ahead with a 13-2 run from 8:43 to the 2:56 mark to lead 31-26 as BYU went 1 of 9 during that span.

With the tally 36-31 in favor of the Bulldogs, Fischer hit two free throws and converted a four-point play to cut the margin to 36-34 with 50 seconds left in the half.

Collinsworth's triple-double fuels Cougars' 99-81 victory over Portland

BYU didn't make a field goal in the first two minutes of the half which allowed Portland to cut the lead to 55-40, forcing a Cougar timeout. Nick Emery put a stop to the slow start seconds after play resumed with a made jumper. Kyle Collinsworth assisted on a Jordan Chatman 3-pointer just over a minute later, and with the assist Collinsworth broke the BYU single-season record for assists.

Portland went off from 3-point land near the midway point of the half to cut the lead to 76-60. Two 3-pointers from Zac Seljaas pushed the BYU lead to 82-64 at the 7:56 timeout. 

Collinsworth collected his 11th career triple-double at the 5:39 mark when he grabbed his 10th rebound of the contest. He then sprinted down the floor and found a cutting Emery who dunked it home to force a Portland timeout with BYU leading 89-70 with 5:23 to play. The Pilots would never threaten again as BYU ran away 99-81.

Collinsworth led the way by extending his own NCAA record for career triple-doubles with 14 points, 10 rebounds and 16 assists. Collinsworth tied the BYU single-game record for assists. Chase Fischer led all scorers with 21 points to go along with four rebounds and a pair of assists. Emery totaled 18 points, four rebounds and four assists. Chatman had a career-high 13 points, Kyle Davis scored 11 points, and Seljaas had 10 points and five assists.

BYU leads Portland 53-32 at the break

Portland got off to a 5-0 lead to start the game before Kyle Collinsworth got BYU on the board with a layup while being fouled. The Cougars made four of its next five field goal attempts to tie the game at nine at the first media timeout. After trading baskets over the next two minutes, the Cougars grabbed a five-point lead, 18-13, thanks to a 3-pointer from Chase Fischer and a Nick Emery layup.

BYU went on a 7-0 run to take a 27-17 lead with 7:23 remaining in the half. After the media timeout, Jordan Chatman made 3-pointers on back-to-back possessions to force a Portland timeout with BYU up 33-17. The Cougars extended the lead to 42-24 with just over three minutes to play thanks to some hot shooting and a Portland cold spell.

The Cougars ended the half leading 53-32 after shooting 53 percent from the field.

Emery leads all scorers at the break with 13 points while Fischer is right behind with 12 to go along with four rebounds. Collinsworth filled the stat line with 10 points, seven rebounds and eight assists. Chatman also chipped in eight points.

 

Cougars finish Toreros 91-33

At the 18:31 mark of the second half, Nick Emery hit his second 3-point field goal of the game to give the Cougars the 44-12 lead. BYU then extended its lead to 39, 53-14, on a bucket by Kyle Davis

With 9:51 to go, Nate Austin dished it off to Kyle Collinsworth on the baseline for a layup. Collinsworth had 12 points in the game.

BYU increased its lead to 46, 72-26, fueled by five straight points by Davin Guinn. With 4:58 to go, Jamal Aytes then hit a baseline jumper to extend the lead to 48, 76-28.

The Cougars finished the contest shooting 56.5 percent from the field, while the Toreros shot 25.9. BYU had 43 points from the bench to San Diego's 15. The Cougars outrebounded the Toreros 49 to 28 and finished the game with 25 assists, and San Diego had five. Emery led all scorers with 17 points, nine rebounds and five assists.

Cougars take the 39-11 lead into halftime

The Cougars started the game on an 8-0 run, forcing a quick San Diego timeout. BYU then proceeded to score five more quick points before the Toreros scored their first points of the contest. At the 11-minute mark, the Cougars led the USD 18-2.  With 8:21 to go in the first half, Kyle Collinsworth extended the BYU lead to 21 as he finished a breakaway dunk.

Nick Emery scored his eighth and ninth point on a finger-roll layup in the lane at the 7:19 mark. Emery led all scorers with nine points at the break. He also had a game-high seven rebounds going into the half. The Cougars finished out the half outscoring the Toreros 11-5 to take the 39-11 lead into the break.

BYU shot 45.7 percent from the field in the 20 minutes of play to San Diego's 16.1. The Cougars dished out 12 first half assists, while the Toreros had two, and BYU had six points off of turnovers to San Diego's two.
