Brandon Bradley: More Than Just Football

Sep 03, 2008 - Posted by Lane Olson at 11:07 am | Updated: May 2, 2011 3:35 pm | Permalink

Fall camp so far has been a lot better for me than it was last year for a lot of different reasons. One being that my knee has felt a lot better, I feel my confidence is better than it was because I can use my knee how I need to. I think the main reason this season has seemed so much different has been because I have done a lot better at allowing my Heavenly Farther to be a larger part in all aspects of my life. I’ve been doing a lot better with my own personal spiritual uplifting, and it has helped me to be more focused in my commitments to the religious aspects of my life as well as my commitments to football. I have been able to rely more on my Heavenly Farther in playing football and not just on my own gifts, and abilities. I know that those gifts and abilities come from him and I thank him for what he has blessed me with.

Thursday's Hero

This afternoon after practice, the team had the special opportunity to meet Will Alderman from Park City, Utah. Will, who is two years old, is a special young man who battles nueroendocrine hyperplasia -- a lung diseases that restricts lung capacity.

Will had the opportunity to make his mark on the team flag that will be carried on to the field during Saturday's game.

Coach Mendenhall presented Will with a team coin.

Will got to meet each member of the team.

Thursday Night Football

Tonight was the first night for the annual Thursday Night football game between members of the scout teams. Running back Tucker Lamb had a notable performance, scoring two touchdowns. Lamb was also credited with a long run of nearly 50 yards that gave the offense a first and goal. Two plays later, B.J. Peterson scored on an outstanding catch.

Tucker Lamb scores his first of two touchdowns.

Lamb scores touchdown no. 2.

Following the scrimmage, Coach Mendenhall the scout team that Thursday Night football is an opportunity for players to show the coaching staff if they had heart, if they were prepared and if they could be trusted. He also pointed out to the players that all of the veteran players were watching along the sidelines. He said they were also watching for many of the same reasons.

After practice, Coach Mendenhall told the media that the team is ready to play.

"I think our guys are ready," he said. "Right now, a game is what our team needs to improve and grow."

Where there are two or more guys battling for playing time, Coach clarified what it would take for one player to beat out another.

"We're looking for who we can really trust. Whoever is the most trustworthy will play.

Asked if he was nervous, Coach said, "I'm not nervous yet. Right now, I see the things we need to improve. That window is closing. I enjoy the day-to-day preparation a lot -- more than the actual game day."

Sticker Day

After Monday's practice, players were able to pick up their first helmet stickers of the season. Players received gold stickers for activities accomplished away from the field, including community service, academics and participating in firesides, etc. In addition, some of the players received blue stickers for goals accomplished on the field during fall camp.

Kicking Duel

With both kickers nailing 61-yard field goals during practice on Saturday, picking a starting kicker is going to be a difficult task. However, Coach Mendenhall has said all along they might consider using both kickers, depending on the situation.

Thursday's Hero

Since the team did not practice on Thursday, today provided the opportunity to welcome Brandon Sulser as this week's Thursday's Hero.

Brandon was paralyzed in a freak accident at Lake Powell 10 years ago. Brandon had the opportunity to talk to the team and to remind them how quickly life can change. He told them to be grateful for their bodies, but not to rely on their physical bodies. He told the team it was their spiritual bodies that really mattered and how he looked forward to one day having a perfect body.

Brandon, who has not let his physical disability slow him down, often speaks to groups about PUSH -- an acronym he has developed to help others understand the importance of personal responsibility.

The letter P stands for "PERSEVERANCE," U stands for "It's UP to you," S stands for "START now to separate yourself from everyone else," and H stands for "HELPING others."

Kellen Fowler introduced Brandon to the team following Friday's practice.

Brandon also had the opportunity to sign the team flag as his commitment to always uphold the mission of the BYU football program in all aspects of his life.

As is customary, Thursday's Hero got to lead the team in a break.

Travis Bright, along with every member of the team had the opportunity to shake hands with today's hero.

As he always does, Coach Mendenhall took a few minutes to visit with today's hero.

Wayne and Mary Latu

On Wednesday, Aug. 20, Mary Latu, the wife of running back Wayne Latu, gave birth to the couple's second child. The child was born over a month and a half early and has had some serious complications. Our thoughts and prayers are with Wayne, Mary, little Malia, and their newborn child. Mary Latu is the sister of freshman linebacker Michael Alisa.

New Signage

For as long as I can remember, the backside of the south scoreboard has stuck out like a sore thumb. It's been a plain, white wall up until yesterday when crews finished applying a new decal to the back. Now, when you see the back of the scoreboard from just about anywhere on campus, there's actually something to look at.

Sorry, got a little artsy with the camera. But, hey. Props to the lanscaping crew for having our campus look like a million bucks. I've been all over the country, visiting campus after campus, and its really difficult to find a more beautifully landscaped campus.

Credentials

It's that time of year when we start gearing up for hosting all the media on campus during game day. Jenny Wheeler, our office manager, plays a huge role in help us get all the credentials organized and delivered.

Countdown to Kickoff

J.J. DiLuigi wants you to know that there are only 10 more days until the Cougars' season-opener against Northern Iowa. He, along with the rest of the team, wants you to know how important it is to wear blue to all 13 games this year. Even if you're parked in front of your television set in Pendleton, Oregon, or in Sagniaw, Michigan, or Hurricane, Utah, or Blackfoot, Idaho, or Pawnee, Nebraska, or wherever it is you are on game day ... wear blue!

Touchdown Run

During Wednesday's practice, redshirt freshman quarterback Stephen Covey led the offense on a scoring drive. Besides an interception from Travis Uale that he returned for a touchdown, Covey's was the only touchdown produced by the offense during the hour-long scrimmage.

I can hear Greg Wrubell now, "He's to the 10 ...

... the five ...

... he dives for the endzone ...

... TOUCHDOWN ... TOUCHDOWN ... TOUCHDOWN!"

Sorry. I got a little carried away. I know, I know. It's only practice.

Collie Update

Austin Collie continues to re-hab after battling a stress fracture in his leg. He could return to action as early as Friday. So, rather than tell you how he did during his workout with trainers and Max Hall today, why don't you take a look for yourself.

After a good workout ... it's time to talk about it.

Countdown to Kickoff

Eleven more days.

Collie on the Run

All-America candidate Austin Collie was on the run this morning. Having sat on the sidelines for the first two weeks of camp with a stress fracture in his leg, Collie was put through a series of runs this morning to evaluate the status of his injury.

After the tests Collie reported, "I feel good."

Special Birthday Gift

On Thursday the President of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Thomas S. Monson, will celebrate his birthday. One of the gifts he requested was something special from the BYU football team. So, to honor the Prophet's birthday, the team signed a team flag that will be presented to the President Monson later this week. Hope we didn't spoil the surprise.

Speaking of Birthdays

Linebacker Vic So'oto is celebrating his 21st birthday today. Happy Birthday, Vic.

Another Pho'oto of So'oto

We managed to snap a pretty good pho'oto of Vic So'oto this morning during special teams work. Depending on who you ask, So'oto may have actually got a hand on the ball.

Ariel View

Each day members of the video crew ride the platform lifts to their 40-foot perch over the practice fields. If you've never been to the top of one of these platforms, trust me when I say it is the most unstable feeling ever. Even on a perfectly still day, those things rock back and forth and feel like they are going to tip over at any moment. I had the opportunity to go up in a lift about eight or nine years ago. I've never done it since. So, my hat's off to these guys.
