BYU remains up 24-13 after the third quarter

Both BYU and Georgia Tech were scoreless in the third quarter. 

The third quarter was a battle of defenses. In the first drive of the quarter, Spencer Hadley sacked the quarterback on 3rd down for a loss of nine yards that forced the Yellow Jackets to punt just two minutes into the quarter. 

Georgia Tech punted a total of three times and had a turnover on downs. BYU punted four times in the quarter with one blocked by a Yellow Jacket.

BYU extended their lead 24-13 in the second quarter.

Georgia Tech was the first to score. After three incomplete passes, the Yellow Jackets attempted and made a field goal from the 37-yard line.

On BYU's next drive, Taysom Hill had two complete passes for a combined 42 yards. After two back-to-back penalties, kicker Justin Sorensen nailed a 23-yard field goal to extend its lead to 17-10.

Georgia Tech had three penalties for a total loss of 21 yards as well as two incomplete passes that led them to punt.

In their last scoring drive of the quarter, Hill had three more complete passes for a total 46 yards. Open for the touchdown, he ran the ball in to give the Cougars a lead of 24-10.

Kyle Van Noy had another big sack for a loss of five yards. After three more incomplete passes, the Yellow Jackets attempted a field goal from the 44 yard line for another three points.

Sorensen attempted a 52-yard field goal on the last play of the half that was just wide right.

BYU leads 14-7 after one quarter

BYU leads Georgia Tech at the end of the first quarter, 14-7. 

BYU was the first to score after Cody Hoffman caught a 45-yard pass in the end zone for a touchdown. 

Georgia Tech answered soon after with a 49-yard pass to take the Yellow Jackets to the BYU 19-yard line. They scored three plays later to tie the game. 

On the ensuing kickoff, Adam Hine returned the kick to the BYU 39-yard line. On the drive, Tayson Hill completed two passes for a total of 22 yards while Jamaal Williams rushed three times for 19 yards to lead the Cougars into the end zone for the touchdown.

Kyle Van Noy had a sack for a loss of five yards for the Yellow Jackets, and the Cougar defense left BYU in the lead at the end of the quarter.

It can be found on Comcast Ch. 269/753 in Utah. For fans outside Utah, follow this link to find the channel for your area. The game is on Ch. 221 on DirecTV and Ch. 158 on DISH Network.

Fans can listen in on the Cougar IMG Sports Network 1160 AM, 102.7 FM and BYUcougars.com.

The Countdown to Kickoff pregame show will begin at 5 p.m. MDT on BYUtv and BYUtvsports.com. Fans can also tune in to BYUtv and BYUtvsports.com for the live postgame show at the conclusion of the game. Radio coverage will begin at 4 p.m. MDT on the Cougar IMG Sports Network

The game begins at 6 p.m. MDT Friday.

BYU beats MTSU 37-10

BYU preserved the 37-10 victory over MTSU as neither team scored in the fourth quarter. The Cougars held the Blue Raiders scoreless over the last three quarters.

With just over 12 minutes left in the game, Taysom Hill threw a pass that went off Paul Lasike’s hands and was picked off by MTSU’s John Kelly deep in BYU territory. On the next play, Blue Raider QB Logan Kilgore threw a fade to the right corner of the endzone that was intercepted by S Daniel Sorensen.

Austin Grammer took over at quarterback for MTSU and led the Blue Raiders to the BYU 7-yard line with just over five minutes left. The drive stalled when the Blue Raiders failed to convert on fourth and one from the BYU 6-yard line.

Ammon Olson came in at quarterback for the Cougars for the last five minutes of the game. BYU ran out the clock behind six straight carries for 48 yards by freshman RB Algernon Brown.

BYU up 37-10 after three quarters

BYU scored two touchdowns in the third quarter to take a 37-10 lead into the fourth. 

J.D. Falslev had a 71-yard punt return for a touchdown down the left sideline with just under a minute left, the first punt return for a touchdown by BYU since Falslev returned one for a touchdown in 2011 at TCU. 

The Cougars took their first drive of the third quarter 60 yards in 12 plays, capped off by a 1-yard touchdown run by Michael Alisa, his second of the game. The touchdown gave the Cougars a 30-10 lead. Taysom Hill was 3-4 with 40 yards passing on the drive. 

BYU leads MSTU 23-10 at half

BYU scored 16 unanswered points in the second quarter to take a 23-10 lead.

Three consecutive completions moved the Cougars to the MTSU 14-yard line with 32 seconds left in the half.  A pass interference penalty gave the Cougars a first and goal from the 2-yard line and RB Michael Alisa scored on the next play to go in the half 23-10.

Taysom Hill ran 50 yards for a touchdown with 7:31 left in the quarter to give BYU a 16-10 lead. The sophomore quarterback finished with half 8-9 with 96 yards passing. He ran 12 times for 142 yards and two TDs.

The Cougars started the quarter with a safety. On the Blue Raider’s first play after a BYU fumble, RB Jordan Parker was tackled in his own end zone by Kyle Van Noy to make the score 10-9.

Junior Ross Apo had three catches for 26 yards and Van Noy had six tackles, one tackle for loss and one pass break up to go along with the safety.  

BYU trails 10-7 after one

BYU trails MTSU at the end of the first quarter, 10-7. The Blue Raiders scored first after a 50-yard kickoff to set up a 42-yard field goal by kicker Cody Clark to give Middle Tennessee State a 3-0 lead.

BYU’s Adam Hine returned the ensuing kickoff 90 yards to the MTSU 10-yard line and a facemask on the Blue Raiders got the Cougars to the 5-yard line. On third and goal from the 12, Taysom Hill ran up the middle to give BYU its first score of the game. Justin Sorensen made the PAT to give the Cougars a 7-3 lead with 10:47 left in the quarter.

Later in the first, MTSU converted on fourth and one to pick up a first down at the BYU 9-yard line. A MTSU hold forced a third and goal from the 16, but WR Marcus Henry hauled in a pass from QB Logan Kilgore to give the Blue Raiders a 10-7 lead.

ESPNU Road Trip to air BYU episode Wednesday night

ESPNU Road Trip, a weekly show hightlighting college football and the atmosphere in college towns, is airing an episode featuring BYU. The show airs this Wednesday  at 5:30 p.m. MDT on ESPNU.

Hosts Ali Nejad (@Ali_Nejad) and Niki Noto (@NikiNoto) and  the crew from Road Trip took in some of the Provo area including Provo Canyon, Y Mountain and Riverside Country Club golf course with LaVell Edwards and Robbie Bosco. The show features a few members of the team as well as the atmosphere and enviornment surrounding a BYU football game.

Awards

Senior JD Falslev and sophomore Taysom Hill both earned honors for their performances against Utah. Falslev was named an Honorable Mention Punt Returner of the Week by College Football Performance Awards. Hill earned Independent Offensive Player of the Week by College Sports Madness. The quarterback also garnered that honor after the BYU-Texas game.

BYU vs. Utah fourth quarter

BYU had possession of the ball at the end of the game but couldn't convert. The Utes held on to win 20-13.

The Cougars scored their first touchdown on a touchdown carry by Michael Alisa from the one-yard line with 5:13 remaining in the game. BYU's scoring drive consisted of six plays and 44 yards in the span of 1:49.

JD Falslev had a 61-yard rush on a punt return with 9:44 remaining in the game.

Utah scored its second touchdown with 12:44 remaining in the game to go up 20-6.

This game was Cody Hoffman's 15th with at least 100 receiving yards, finishing the game with 108.
