BYU women's soccer received the National Soccer Coaches Association of America Team Academic Award for having a team GPA of 3.0 or higher. The Cougars are one of 593 women's soccer teams in all divisions to receive the award.

Since the start of the season, BYU had 10 players named to the West Coast Conference Commissioner's Honor Roll and five players receive WCC All-Academic honors, including goalkeeper Erica Owens being named to the WCC All-Academic team for the second straight year. The Cougars have also been nationally ranked every week this season on their way to a second consecutive WCC championship.

Check out the NSCAA Team Academic Award announcement.

Thornock's goal makes it on WCC's Top Plays

Another week and another goal making it to No. 2 on the West Coast Conference's top play countdown. This time it's Jaiden Thornock's goal which made it 2-0 against Weber State. The goal helped BYU advance to face Colorado in the second round of the NCAA tournament on Thursday at 2:30 p.m. MT.

Our Corner of the Bracket

Now that BYU women's soccer has made it to Tallahassee, Fla., for the second and hopefully third rounds of the NCAA tournament, let's take a look at how the rest of our region is looking.

At the other host site in Lincoln, Neb., the No. 2 seed Huskers are playing Boston College in their second round matchup on Friday. Nebraska won both the Big Ten regular season title and the conference tournament. Boston College finished sixth in the ACC behind the four No. 1 seeds and Notre Dame. ACC teams haven't lost yet in the tournament.

After beating Seattle 2-0 on Saturday, No. 3 seed Portland faces Illinois Friday in the other game in Lincoln. The Illini needed penalty kicks to beat Washington State in the first round. The field was more mud than grass, but Illinois won despite being outshot 29-10. In the regular season, Illinois tied for fifth in the Big Ten and was one of eight teams the Big Ten got in the tournament. In the first round, those teams went 5-3.

Here in Tallahassee, Florida State plays Ole Miss on Thursday at 5 p.m. MT. The Seminoles are the No. 1 overall seed in the tournament and have a 32-game unbeaten streak on their home field. Ole Miss finished fourth in the SEC, which had six teams make the tournament. All six won in the first round.

The Cougars face Colorado in the other Tallahassee game on Thursday at 2:30 MT. Colorado finished sixth in the Pac 12 and was one of six teams from the conference who made the tournament. Pac 12 teams went 3-3 in the first round. The Buffaloes are led by senior Anne Stuller, who totaled nine goals and seven assists, and freshman forward Brie Hooks with eight goals and two assists of her own.

Non-conference Check-in

Nov 04, 2013 - Posted by knielsen at 11:57 am | Updated: November 4, 2013 3:05 pm | Permalink

For most of the NCAA's women's soccer teams, conference tournament time has begun. Here's how our non-conference opponents fared in their conference seasons and what they are looking at heading into the final week of the season.

Cal State Fullerton (8-6-5, 3-3-2) snuck into the Big West tournament even though they lost in their final game. The Titans enter as the fourth seed and take on No. 1 seed Cal Poly on Thursday in the semifinals at home.

No. 18 Nebraska (15-3-1, 10-1-0) won the Big Ten regular season championship, only losing to Michigan. The Huskers will face Minnesota in the Big Ten quarterfinals on Wednesday at the University of Illinois. Nebraska is projected to get a national seed barring something crazy happening.

LSU (9-8-2, 5-5-1) made it to the SEC tournament as a No. 7 seed and faces Auburn this afternoon at 3 p.m. MST.

Utah (9-4-6, 5-3-2) is currently fourth in the Pac-12 and plays Colorado this weekend to finish off their season. The Utes are a bubble team and a win or draw against Colorado would go a long way in securing them a spot in the NCAA tournament field.

Oregon (4-11-3, 1-7-0) sits at the bottom of the Pac-12 going into the final week of the season.

UC Irvine (11-6-0, 6-2-0) qualified as the No. 2 seed in the Big West and plays No. 3 UC Riverside on Thursday in the semifinals.

Oklahoma (4-13-1, 1-7-0) missed out on the Big 12 tournament.

Long Beach State (8-7-3, 2-3-3) missed out on the Big West tournament losing to UC Riverside on Saturday in what was essentially a play-in game.

No. 13 Denver (16-1-1, 7-0-0) swept through the Summit League, but still has to face Fort Wayne in the semifinals of the conference tournament on their home field. The Pioneers are projected to get a national seed if they can make it through the conference tournament undefeated.

Watch BYUtv's feature on Ashley Hatch from this past week. Hatch scored the game winner against No. 6 Portland a week ago and assisted on Marissa Nimmer's game winner against San Diego on Friday night at South Field.

The freshman forward from Gilbert, Ariz., has four goals and five assists so far this season.
