Noon or Earlier

Dec 16, 2011 - Posted by Kyle Chilton at 4:30 pm | Updated: December 16, 2011 4:34 pm | Permalink

Saturday’s matchup with No. 6/7 Baylor is scheduled for noon, a relatively early tip time for a college basketball game. In fact, under Dave Rose — whose first season was 2005-06 — BYU has played just seven games at noon or earlier.

The Cougars are 8-0 in those games including 6-0 on neutral floors and 2-0 on the road. Last season BYU defeated No. 6/4 San Diego State on the road and last Saturday the Cougars downed Utah at the Huntsman Center. This will be the first noon or earlier game in the Marriott Center under Rose. What does all this mean? Probably nothing. But it’s a fun fact.

Cougars vs. Top-10 Competition

Dec 13, 2011 - Posted by Kyle Chilton at 4:28 pm | Updated: December 14, 2011 11:09 am | Permalink

Saturday’s matchup with Baylor is an opportunity for BYU to prove it belongs in the top-25 discussion. The Bears will come to the Marriott Center ranked No. 6 in the AP Poll and No. 7 in the ESPN/USA Today Coaches Poll. Baylor is 7-0 with a Wednesday home tilt against 3-6 Bethune-Cookman.

Welcoming a top-10 opponent to the Marriott Center is nothing new for BYU. This will mark the fourth-straight season the Cougars have hosted a top-10 team at home. In addition, BYU has played at least one game against a top-10 team each season since 2006-07.

Most of the games against Top-10 foes have been very entertaining and competitive. And last season, Dave Rose and company broke through for two huge wins against San Diego State. While Jimmer and Jackson are gone, Noah Hartsock, Brandon Davies and Charles Abouo all played key roles in those games. The Cougars have plenty of experience and will have a rocking Marriott Center crowd backing them as they take on the Bears.

BYU vs. Utah: A New Era

Dec 09, 2011 - Posted by Kyle Chilton at 4:39 pm | Permalink

BYU will take on Utah in the Deseret Duel tomorrow at 12 p.m. MST. The Cougars and Utes have face each other in basketball every year since the 1908-09 season with the exception of the war-shortened 1943-44 season.

While the fact that tomorrow’s game is important for in-state bragging rights and points in the Deseret Duel, some things have changed. For starters, this marks the first time since 1917-18 that the schools will be playing each other as members of different conferences. Utah is now in the Pac 12 and BYU in the West Coast Conference.

Saturday’s game will also be the first December meeting between the schools in the history of the series. In fact, every BYU and Utah matchup has taken place in January, February and March. There has never been a men’s basketball game between the institutions in any other month.

One other change is that the Cougars and Utes have battled at least twice in every season since the 1920-21 season. This season and the 1919-20 are the only full seasons since 1907-08 that BYU and Utah will only play once.

All that being said, there is a lot on the line on Saturday as the Cougars look to continue a three-game winning streak during which they’ve played their best basketball of the season. Utah is looking to shake a 1-7 start and garner some momentum before they begin Pac 12 play next month.

If you’re a BYU fan and live in the area, get some tickets and help make the Cougars feel comfortable in the Huntsman Center.

Cusick, Cougars Ready to Take on Utes

Dec 09, 2011 - Posted by Taylor Wilson at 4:11 pm | Updated: December 9, 2011 4:43 pm | Permalink

Following a big win over Weber State, the BYU men’s basketball team will head north to Salt Lake City to face off against the rival Utah Utes, their third game against an in-state opponent this season.

“I think you just get excited about an emotional rivalry game even if the two teams aren’t in the same conference,” BYU head coach Dave Rose said. “The preparation for this game feels pretty similar to previous years and we are excited to go up and play.”

As a former member of the Utah basketball program, junior guard Craig Cusick will bring extra emotion into the game. Cusick is coming off a season best game in which he dished out a career-best eight assists vs. Weber State.

“I think going back to your old school to play against some of your old buddies and coaches really gives you an added energy,” Cusick said. “I had a great opportunity and a great time at Utah but I am here now and am very excited for Saturday’s game.”

Although Cusick will be returning to his former school, he will not see many familiar faces on the court. There have been several changes in the Utah program since Cusick transferred, but he is familiar with at least one member of his former team.

“David Foster was my roommate when I was at Utah,” Cusick said. “Unfortunately, I think he is injured right now, so he won’t get to play. But I will still go into this game with a little extra emotion and will be ready to play.”

BYU will face the Utes Saturday at the Huntsman Center, with tipoff scheduled for 12 p.m. MST. The tipoff is the earliest of the season for the Cougars, who will be looking for their fourth-straight win.
