Why did you choose to come to BYU?
It was a dream come true to play here, more than anything. I grew up going to all the football games. Before I committed here I was probably a bigger BYU football fan than I was a BYU basketball fan. It’s still probably pretty close. It’s always been a dream of mine, so when BYU offered, it was a done deal.
What’s the best thing about Coach Rose?
He’s very passionate about the game. Big competitor. He’ll do whatever it takes to win. He and the other coaches obviously spend tons of time making the scouting reports. He’s just really passionate and wants to win.
If you could do one thing extremely well, besides basketball, what would that be?
I think it would be cool to do the eating contests, like the Nathan’s Hot Dog eating contests. I don’t know how those guys just pound it down, but I think that would be fun to do.
When did you start playing basketball?
I’ve played basically all my life. I had a Little Tikes hoop when I was about three or four years old and I would shoot around with my little brother. I guess as I grew up, like literally, as I got taller I thought this must be the sport for me. I’ve always loved playing football, but my body was built to play basketball and that’s fine with me. I love this sport.
If you had to play a different position, what would you play?
I like where I play. I like playing power forward more, being able to play with your back to the basket or stepping outside and shooting. I think that’s perfect for me. I’m not a typical center where you just play back-to-the-basket the whole time. I like to take the outside shot sometimes, too.
Who’s been the most influential person in your life?
My parents. They’ve always been there for me, always given me advice and I can talk to them about anything.
What’s something unique about you that people don’t know?
I love the series 24. This offseason, with my shoulder recovering, I watched 6 seasons of the show and just finished the eighth season a couple weeks ago. Once I finished it was like a piece of me was gone. I don’t have anything to watch on Netflix anymore.
If you could meet anybody from history, who would it be?
Probably Kevin Garnett. He’s my favorite basketball player. I love his game, I love how hard he plays. He works hard on both sides of the floor, so I try to shape my game after his a little bit.
