BYU Hoops Mailbag Week One

Nov 13, 2013 - Posted by knielsen on November 13, 2013 at 11:19 am | Updated: November 13, 2013 11:24 am

Welcome to the first installment of the BYU Hoops Mailbag. The Cougars won their first two games over a long weekend defeating Weber State at home Friday and Stanford on the road Monday. This week BYU faces Mount St. Mary's on Friday night at 7:30 p.m. MT followed by Colorado Mesa on Saturday at 7:30 p.m.

Reggie from Cedar Hills, Utah, asked:

What is BYU's record in home openers at the Marriott Center?

The Cougars are 33-10 in home openers at the Marriott Center, which dates back to the Marriott Center opening to start the 1971-72 season. BYU is in the midst of an eight-game winning streak in home openers after the 81-72 win over Weber State last Friday. The current win streak is tied with 1971-72 until 1978-79 when the Cougars won their first eight home openers at the Marriott Center.

Jordan from Norman, Okla., asked a three-parter:

When was the last time BYU scored that many points against a Pac-12 team?

BYU's 112 points scored against Stanford was a record for the Cougars against a Pac-12 team. BYU scored 104 at Utah on Jan. 11, 2011 in a 104-79 win, but the Utes were a member of the MWC at the time. The last time BYU scored 100-plus against a team that was in the Pac-10 at the time was Dec. 1, 1992 at home against Arizona State, a 108-98 win.

… or in the second game of the season or earlier?

BYU's 112 points scored at Stanford are the most scored in one of the team's first two games of the season since the Cougars defeated Hofstra 119-84 on Nov. 30, 1983 at home. That was the second game of that season. Other notable early season scores include: In 2000-01, BYU scored 100 points in the season opener against Elon. The Cougars won 100-63. The Arizona State game referenced above was also a season opener. In 1986-87, the Cougars scored 110 in the opener (a 119-110 loss at Oklahoma) and 100 in the second game (a 100-86 home win against Utah State).

When was the last time we shot about 53.5% against a power conference team?

The last time BYU shot 53.5 percent or better against a power conference team was Dec. 28, 2009, at Arizona. The Cougars shot 56.9 percent (37 of 65) from the field in BYU's 99-69 win. Jimmer Fredette scored 47 points on 16 of 23 shooting to set the BYU single game scoring record (a record he broke a few times the following season). Current Cougar Tyler Haws, a freshman that season, hit 5 of 8 from the field and 2 of 4 from three for 12 points in that game.

Shooter from Hickory, Ind., asked:

Is the West Coast Conference still undefeated? Really?

Yes, the West Coast Conference's 10 teams haven't lost yet. The conference as a whole is 15-0 with wins over major conference opponents Stanford, Colorado State, Nevada, Louisiana Tech and Akron.

Only the Big Ten is the only other conference still without a loss by any of its teams. The 12 Big Ten teams are 21-0.
