Eric Mika, Matt Carlino and Tyler Haws led the Cougars in the first half of the game. All three had 12 points at the end of the half. Mika had 10 points in the first eight minutes of regulation.
Iowa State opened up strong in the first half of the game, taking a quick 7-2 lead.
BYU took its first lead at 15-14 from a Kyle Collinsworth bucket. The Cougars later went on an 8-0 run, sparked by five-straight points from Carlino, to put BYU up 25-18.
A Carlino steal and assist to Mika led to an alley-oop dunk that gave the Cougars their largest lead of the half with a 36-24 advantage.
A 10-0 run eclipsed by a pair of free throws brought Iowa State within a point of BYU at 43-42. Carlino took the last shot of the first half just before the buzzer, extending the lead to 47-42.
The Cyclones shot 46 percent compared to the Cougars' 47 percent. BYU outrebounded Iowa State 27-19. The Cougars held an 11-2 advantage with points from turnovers.
