The story of the first half has been about stringing runs together. A Luke Worthington and-1 play capped an 8-0 run as BYU took a 10-5 lead. The Cougars put together another run to extend the lead to 11 with the help of an Eric Mika dunk and six points by Tyler Haws.

At the 8:27 mark Matt Carlino sparked a 9-0 run by himself, knocking down back-to-back-to-back 3-pointers.

Despite only shooting 38.7 percent for the half, Portland crept back in the game on 4 of 9 shooting from three to cut the deficit to 10.

On the last BYU possession of the half, Carlino hit another three to push the lead to 46-33 in favor of the Cougars at halftime. In the first half, three players in double figures led BYU. Haws had 13 points while Anson Winder and Carlino had 10 and 12 points, respectively.
