Tyler Haws led BYU with 11 points and two assists in the first half, but the Cougars trailed at halftime 44-39.
Eric Mika added nine points and five rebounds for BYU. The team shot 45.7 percent from the field, but was 1 of 7 from behind the arc. Utah State shot 59.5 percent from the field and 45.5 percent from distance.
The teams started the game trading baskets before BYU went on a 6-0 run to take a 10-4 lead. Utah State fought back to tie the game back at 14 with just over 14 minutes remaining. BYU went on another 10-3 run to take the 29-22 lead with 10 minutes remaining. However, Utah State answered quickly with an 8-2 run to cut the Cougars’ lead to one at 31-30.
The teams continued to trade baskets for the next several minutes keeping the game close until Utah State hit a 3-pointer to take their first lead since the opening minutes of the game at 40-37. They would extend the lead to five at 44-39 after the Cougars failed to score over the final 3:30 seconds of the half.
