The big news in conference play this week was Portland's 82-73 upset of Gonzaga. It was the Bulldogs' first loss in West Coast Conference play and helped tighten up the standings.

Gonzaga now leads four different teams by one game in the loss column. San Francisco, Saint Mary's, BYU and Pepperdine each have two losses in conference play. Of those teams, San Francisco and Saint Mary's have already lost to the Bulldogs once, while BYU doesn't play Gonzaga until next week and Pepperdine faces them Thursday. Santa Clara beat Saint Mary's on a 3-pointer with 1.2 seconds left to give the Gaels their second WCC loss of the season. The Cougars were the only team to win both games last week as they beat Pepperdine and Loyola Marymount at home.

The Cougars travel to face San Francisco on ESPNU Thursday, Jan. 16, at 7 p.m. MST and Santa Clara on Saturday, Jan. 18, at 8 p.m. MST on ROOT Sports.
