Brandon Davies Meets with Media

Nov 09, 2011 - Posted by Taylor Wilson at 8:24 pm | Permalink

For the first time since playing his final game of the 2010-11 season, a February 26 win at San Diego State, Brandon Davies met with the media on Tuesday to discuss last season, this season and his decision to continue his career at Brigham Young University.

On his trials at the end of the 2010-11 season: "It's definitely been hard. It's been hard on a lot of people, not just myself. I'm just lucky to be surrounded with people that love me, a great team, great family members and friends."

On missing the end of the 2010-11 season: "It hurt. Not just me, but everyone around me. Its definitely something I'll never forget about and something that I never want to do again, so I just use that to drive me in all that I do today."

On his treatment by BYU: "I was definitely treated more than fair. Just to be able to make it back here and be able to be a part of this team again is a blessing to me."

On if he has changed since last season: "Honestly, I think I'm a totally different person, but that's up to other people to decide. I can't really tell someone that I've changed; it's up to me to show that. Hopefully I'm headed in the right direction and am doing the best I can."

On how last season affected his relationship with the team: "It's definitely strengthened us; it's a bad thing, a terrible thing that we all had to go through, and they were all willing to go through it with me and pull through together. I think that says a lot about their character and the way we are as a team."

On the 2011-12 opener at Utah State: "They have a great program. They came in, they fought hard all game here and it's going to be even more of a battle at their place where they're more comfortable. It's up to us to go in there and break them the best we can and play our best game."

Hanau White Wings Update

Oct 04, 2011 - Posted by Kyle Chilton at 1:13 pm | Permalink

About a week ago we provided an update on Logan Magnusson and Chris Miles playing for the Hanau White Wings. After starting the season with a win, the White Wings fell to the BSW Sixers 70-63 before bouncing back with a 76-66 win over Licher Baeren today. Miles had an impressive line today with 14 points on 7-of-9 shooting to go with nine boards and three blocks. Magnusson made the most of his time, posting three points and two boards. The White Wings are back in action on Oct. 8 against Langen.

Cougars Overseas

Sep 28, 2011 - Posted by Kyle Chilton at 9:14 am | Permalink

The Cougars are hard at work getting ready for the 2011-12 season. Practice starts in 17 days. The Cougar Tipoff is 28 days away. In the meantime, several former Cougars are starting or getting ready to start their professional seasons overseas. The previous blog post gave you a look at what Chris Miles and Logan Magnusson are up to in Germany. Here we'll give you a look at what a few other guys are up to.

Lee Cummard signed with Kyoto Hannaryz of the BJ League in Japan. Kyoto plays in the league's Western Conference. Lee played the previous two seasons in France. Check out his profile on the team's website. There are a few other familiar faces on the roster. Former Weber State Wildcats Jermaine Boyette and Lance Allred will also suit up for Kyoto this season.

Based on what I could find on Google and Eurobasket, it looks like Keena Young has signed to play for YMCA Lahti in Finland. Young played in Israel last season and averaged 17.4 points and 6.1 rebounds for Elitzur Ramla.

Jonathan Tavernari is on the roster for Pallacanestro Biella in Italy. He'll be making his professional debut this season.

Trent Whiting continues to tear it up in Italy. Last season he led the Lega Due in scoring at 22.4 points per game playing for Aget Imola. He'll be suiting up for Aget again this season. Whiting scores 43 in the video below while hitting 10-of-12 from three. Gotta love the call at 1:34.

Miles and Magnusson in Deutschland

Sep 28, 2011 - Posted by Kyle Chilton at 7:58 am | Permalink

Former Cougars Chris Miles and Logan Magnusson are hooping it up for the Hanau White Wings in Das Land der Dichter und Denker — the land of poets and thinkers (thank you Wikipedia). The White Wings had their first game on Saturday, Sept. 24 and defeated TSV Troester 71-60. Miles — who is in his second season with the White Wings — was in the starting five and had seven points and six boards. Magnusson came off the bench in his professional game and had two points, two boards and one assist in nine minutes. And knowing Logan, he probably took a charge or two.

Watch the highlights below or click here. The highlights for the White Wings start at 1:10 and go until about 4:00. Miles has a dunk at 2:23 and Magnusson's beard makes a few appearances.

Thoughts on BYU in the Acropolis of Athens Tournament

Aug 23, 2011 - Posted by Kyle Chilton at 11:16 am | Permalink

Here is a link where you can watch the games at the Acropolis of Athens Tournament. The Italy vs. Bulgaria game is on right now and due to the language barrier, I'm not 100 percent positive BYU vs. Greece will be on next but I'm pretty sure it will.

The Cougars have been given an incredible opportunity to play two of the top national teams in the world today and tomorrow at the Acropolis of Athens Tournament. BYU faces Greece today at 12:15 p.m. MT and Italy tomorrow at 9:45 a.m. MT. And these aren't the junior teams. These are the senior national teams.

BYU has played well so far in Greece, defeating the Athens All-Stars and ASE Doukas. But the next two games will be a level of competition the Cougars haven't seen, and weren't expecting. The Cougars had a slate of games scheduled but when a team withdrew from the Acropolis Tournament, BYU was called upon to fill in. It will be an incredible opportunity for the team to see how they measure up with some of the best players in the world.

While this team did graduate two all-timers in Jimmer and Jackson, the Cougars aren't without leadership. They have seniors Noah Hartsock and Charles Abouo who have been through three NCAA Tournaments and won two conference titles. Abouo has played with the Ivory Coast National Team for two summers, including the 2010 World Championships in Turkey. His experience and leadership will play an important role for BYU in these two games.

Greece finished 2010 ranked No. 4 in the world by FIBA and is currently No. 7. If you can read Greek, here is the official page for Greek basketball. Here is the nation's page on FIBA. While it's tough to find what the team has done this year and who is on the roster, this team is obviously enjoying some level off success despite numerous injuries and other issues.

Italy is ranked No. 15 in the world right now but is likely the most talented team of the four participating in the Acropolis Tournament. The Italian roster includes NBAers Andrea Bargnani, Danilo Gallinari and Marco Belinelli. All three play significant roles for their respective NBA teams and Gallinari and Belinelli helped their teams reach the 2011 playoffs.

For the speakers of Italian out there, here is Italy's official site for its national teams. Here is the FIBA page for Italy.

Cougars in Greece: Day 1

From assistant coach Tim LaComb - Tuesday, Aug. 16

We arrived in Athens via NYC at 9:30 a.m. Greece time (Tuesday). We left the airport and took a bus tour of Athens. We visited the Panathinaikos which hosted the Olympics in 1896. We walked the Plaka section of Athens below the Acropolis. We had a team meal in the evening and all tried to fight off jet leg. Everyone is healthy and happy. We are excited to see the Parthenon and play our first game this afternoon at 6 p.m. vs Athens All Stars. Will report more later.

Jimmer Hitting from Deep

Jimmer Fredette is hosting a camp in Lehi this week and BYUtv was on-hand to film him giving his campers a show. He hit three shots from half court and beyond.
