The Cougars scored the first points of the game and lead 7-0 at the end of the first quarter.
Midway through the first, the BYU defense forced a three-and-out, but a 62-yard punt by Sean Wale pinned the Cougars inside their own 20. The Cougars moved the ball down the field with a 21-yard completion to J.D. Falslev and 22-yard pass to Kanaeaku Friel. Taysom Hill’s 20-yard touchdown run finished the drive and Justin Sorensen’s extra point gave the Cougars a 7-0 lead.
After forcing another three-and-out, the Cougars ended the quarter by marching down to the 10-yard line, highlighted by long completions to Friel and Mitch Matthews.
The Broncos’ opening drive ended with a turnover on downs at the BYU 35-yard line. On the ensuing possession, the Cougars marched down the field on back-to-back completions to Jamaal Williams and a 17-yard run by Alge Brown. A fourth-down conversion put BYU inside the BSU 20, but two false starts and an incompletion forced the Cougars to settle for a field goal attempt. Sorensen missed the 30-yard kick wide left.
