Taysom Hill's third passing touchdown of the game and a field goal from Justin Sorensen helped the Cougars take a 34-13 lead after three quarters. Hill was 4 of 8 with 64 yards in the quarter.

Mitch Matthews caught a 40-yard touchdown to give the Cougars a 31-6 lead with 8:50 left in the quarter. The play capped off a six play, 75-yard drive highlighted by rushes of 10 and 13 yards by Jamaal Williams and Paul Lasike, respectively.

BSU’s Shane Williams-Rhodes had 40-yard punt return to give the Broncos the ball at the Cougars’ 22-yard line. Two short rushes and an incomplete pass set up a fourth and five, but quarterback Grant Hedrick escaped for a nine-yard run to pick up the first down after nearly being sacked. On third and goal from the five, Hedrick ran up the middle for the Broncos’ first touchdown of the game to make it 31-13.

With just over two minutes left in the quarter, Hedrick completed a nine-yard pass to Geraldo Boldewijn, but Boldewijn was hit by linebacker Uani ‘Unga, forcing the ball loose. Kyle Van Noy recovered the fumble giving the Cougars the ball on the BSU 29-yard line. The Bronco defense held the Cougars to a 34-yard field goal by Justin Sorensen to give the Cougars a 34-13 lead.

On the first drive of the second half, the Cougars took the ball to BSU’s 34 before stalling and being forced to punt. The Broncos got a 61-yard run by Jay Ajayi to move the ball inside the BYU 20. After three straight rushes, BSU was forced to settle for a field goal. Dan Goodale split the uprights to cut the lead to 24-6.

With 30 seconds left in the quarter, Hedrick sailed a pass that was intercepted by safety Skye PoVey to give the Cougars the ball back at the BSU 48-yard line.
