BYU trails MTSU at the end of the first quarter, 10-7. The Blue Raiders scored first after a 50-yard kickoff to set up a 42-yard field goal by kicker Cody Clark to give Middle Tennessee State a 3-0 lead.

BYU’s Adam Hine returned the ensuing kickoff 90 yards to the MTSU 10-yard line and a facemask on the Blue Raiders got the Cougars to the 5-yard line. On third and goal from the 12, Taysom Hill ran up the middle to give BYU its first score of the game. Justin Sorensen made the PAT to give the Cougars a 7-3 lead with 10:47 left in the quarter.

Later in the first, MTSU converted on fourth and one to pick up a first down at the BYU 9-yard line. A MTSU hold forced a third and goal from the 16, but WR Marcus Henry hauled in a pass from QB Logan Kilgore to give the Blue Raiders a 10-7 lead.
