BYU offense under the direction of freshman Taysom Hill tallied 173 yards in the first quarter, leading to a touchdown by Jamaal Williams. The defense kept up the pressure with 14 tackles, sending the team into the second quarter with a 7-0 lead.
Hill recorded 63 passing yards in his first quarter at starting quarterback and Brandon Ogletree had five tackles to lead the defense.
Following Williams’ two-yard touchdown rush, Hawai’i briefly had the ball before Daniel Sorensen picked off a pass from quarterback Sean Schroeder. Hawai’i got the ball back with its own interception by Ne’Quan Phillips with just over five minutes left in the quarter but the Warriors were unable to score.
