BYU and Utah's defense held strong to start the first quarter forcing each other to punt until Utah made a field goal late in the quarter to put them up 3-0.

Defensive lineman Remington Peck recorded a sack that resulted in a loss of seven yards for Utah. Taysom Hill completed a 30-yard pass to Brett Thompson, but BYU was outrushed 126-73.

On defense, Kyle Van Noy recorded one pass breakup and a quarterback hurry forcing Utah to throw a bad pass.

With under two minutes left in the quarter, BYU ran back a kick return, but the play was called back because of a penalty.

Utah had a 65-yard run that helped the Utes get into position for a field goal late in the first quarter.
