BYU senior linebacker Jordan Pendleton allowed the BYU Athletic Communications staff sit down with him during a morning breakout session at the 2011 BYU football media day. Pendleton looks forward to the exposure BYU will get during the 2011 season.
"I think going independent will help the BYU program get its name out there because I feel like we are often overlooked," Pendleton said. "This exposure will give us an opportunity to show the nation what we can do as a team and as a university. People around the country don't know what we are capable of and being on ESPN and BYUtv will be beneficial."
The 2010 season was a tough year for Pendleton and the Cougars. BYU opened the season 1-4 and lost to both in-state rivals, Utah and Utah State.
"It's huge for us to beat Utah State and Utah this season," Pendleton said. "We take pride in winning the in-state rivalry because we always want to be the best team in the state. To lose to both teams last year really fuels our fire for this season. We hadn't lost to Utah State in years before last year and they just came out and played better than us. We never want to lose to any team, but especially not to our in-state rivals."
BYU finished the 2010 season with a 7-6 record and with a New Mexico Bowl victory over the UTEP Miners. Pendleton hopes to carry the momentum from the end of last season into the 2011 season.
"The beginning of last season was a definite disappointment," Pendleton said. "We want to come out this year and finish what we started at the end of last year. We want to go out and win some of these big games with a national audience. Our goal isn't to just play these big programs on national TV but to beat them on national TV."
The Cougars will face off against Ole Miss in Mississippi to open the 2011 season.
"I'm completely focused on the Ole Miss game. It's the only game I am worried about right now. Our team is excited to go down and play them. They're an SEC team and we know they will have a ton of athletes that are ready to play. We are ready to get the season going and we are all looking forward to playing Ole Miss in that first game."
