Monday, Dec. 23
On Monday morning it was time to get back to work preparing for the Fight Hunger Bowl on Dec. 27 in San Francisco. The day began with 8:30 a.m. team meetings — then it was off to Oakland for an 11 a.m. practice at Laney College. BYU’s Monday practice included 14 timed sessions and lasted just over 95 minutes on Laney’s brand new field turf.

While the team buses headed back to the hotel for lunch, Coach Mendenhall, Kyle Van Noy, Danny Sorenson and Tyson Hill made a trip to AT&T Park for the Fight Hunger Bowl press conference, featuring the head coaches and three athletes from BYU and Washington. Below are some quotes from the press conference…

Coach Bronco Mendenhall
We are very thankful for the chance to play in San Francisco at the Fight Hunger Bowl. The people have been great to us. It’s great to be in the post season. It’s also great to play well in post season, so I think there’s a lot at stake. There is still a lot of preparation to do to make sure that we are ready to play. We are playing a fantastic opponent. We believe this will be the best opponent we’ve played postseason in my nine years. We think it will be a great matchup.

The busy day concluded with a team trip to San Francisco Bay and Alcatraz Island. Often referred to as “The Rock,” Alcatraz was America’s premier maximum-security prison from the 1930s until the mid-1960s and the final stop for the nation's most incorrigible inmates. In 1986, Alcatraz was designation as a National Historic Landmark.

The Cougars will continue preparations for the 2013 Fight Hunger Bowl on Tuesday with an 11 a.m. practice at Laney College.
