BYU struck early in the second when quarterback Taysom Hill came in to finish off the drive with an 18-yard touchdown pass to tight end Kaneakua Friel. The play marked Hill's first collegiate appearance. After their own 57-yard drive, Washington State answered back to put themselves on the scoreboard with a 47-yard field goal.
BYU came back with another successful drive to set up kicker Riley Stephenson for a 28-yard field goal to put the home team up by 14. Following the score, BYU’s defense held Washington State to a three and out, gaining good field position on the punt. Kaneakua Friel then scored touchdown No. 3 for BYU on a 7-yard touchdown pass from Nelson. Washington State fought back to end the quarter, ending the half on a 53-yard drive for a field goal.
