Sophomore Nick Emery put the first points on the board with a 3-pointer just over a minute into the contest. Only two minutes later, he sank another three to give the Cougars 6-2 lead over the Chanticleers. BYU led Coastal Carolina 18-13 halfway through the first period, but L.J. Rose extended the edge to eight after hitting a 3-pointer with nine minutes remaining.

BYU overpowers Coppin State with 96-59 victory

In the second half, the Cougars’ powerful post play and aggressive defense secured a 96-59 victory over Coppin State.

BYU opened the second half with a 13-2 run after back-to-back dunks from Eric Mika and Yoeli Childs and the Cougars led 61-34 at the 14:46 mark.

Sophomore Eric Mika started the night strong, scoring the first two baskets of the game to help BYU to an early 4-0 lead. T.J. Haws scored the next eight points from the field and BYU held a 14-2 lead at the 15:50 mark.

The Eagles knocked down a few shots in an attempt to rally, but the Cougar offense held pace and took a 20-9 lead with 13:41 after a pair of free throws by senior L.J. Rose.

BYU victorious in season-opener against Princeton

The Tigers came out strong in the second period and went on a 10-3 run to cut the Cougar advantage to only three, 48-45, just five minutes into the half. Haws answered the Princeton run with a 3-pointer, and Childs followed it up shortly with a layup.

Haws sunk another trey with 13:30 remaining, and an impressive steal by him on the defensive end gave the ball back to BYU. An LJ Rose shot was rebounded by Mika for the put-back and the Cougars led the Tigers 58-48.

Cougars claim lead over Princeton at the half

Sophomore Nick Emery sunk a 3-pointer just 30 seconds into the game to open up the scoring, but Princeton went on a quick run and led the Cougars by a score of 10-5 by the 17:23 mark. A 6-0 spurt from BYU which them an 11-10 edge was followed by a 3-pointer from Princeton to give the lead back to the Tigers.

BYU Dress and Grooming Standards: Beard Exception

Due to questions related to the beard worn by Cougar basketball player L.J. Rose, BYU athletics has released the following statement:

The BYU Dress and Grooming Standards have a Beard Exception for students with a medical need. Like other BYU students with beards, Rose has met with a physician and has been approved by the Honor Code Office to wear a beard.

Cougars defeat BYU-Hawaii in dominant fashion, 110-63

BYU reached 100 points with three minutes remaining in the second half and beat BYU-Hawaii by a score of 110-63.

The Cougars held the Seasiders to only 28 points in the half.

BYU went on a 22-0 run over the Seasiders that spanned nearly eight minutes beginning at the 16:36 mark. The run extended the Cougar lead to 40, making it 84-44. BYU scored 17 more points in the final five minutes before claiming the final victory.

BYU found the basket quite a bit in the first half of the Cougars’ exhibition matchup against its island counterpart BYU-Hawaii on Wednesday.

The Cougars scored the first six points of the contest with baskets from senior Kyle Davis and sophomore Eric Mika, and were able to maintain a lead the entire half.

BYU opened the second half with three layups in two minutes, giving them a 44-39 lead.

After two lead changes within a minute, the Cougars extended their lead to five on two layups by Kyle Davis, giving them a 52-47 advantage with 14 minutes to play. Nick Emery extended their lead to eight on a three-point play, 54-47.

BYU leads Creighton 38-37 at halftime of NIT quarterfinals

BYU or Creighton didn't put up a basket until the 17:53 mark, when Creighton hit two 3-pointers to go up 6-0. Corbin Kaufusi scored the first five points of the game for the Cougars, but a layup from the Blue Jays gave them an early 8-5 advantage with 15 minutes to play.

Two Creighton 3-pointers and a Nick Emery 3-pointer took the score to 15-9 with 13 minutes to play.
