BYU leads 45-34 against Pacific

Haws was the leading scorer at the end of the first half with 24 points on the board.  The score at halftime was 45-34.

Pacific put the first points up on the board with BYU right behind. The Cougars got out to an early 6-2 lead.

It was a fast-paced and physical first half, with both squad’s bigs constantly fighting for the rebound.

By 11:10, the score was 22-12, with Tyler Haws scoring 18 points.

The Cougars return home from a four-game road trip to start four straight in the Marriott Center. BYU sits behind Saint Mary's and San Francisco and is now a full three games back of Gonzaga. The Gaels enter the week on a four-game win streak, but have to travel to San Diego before coming to Provo. Saint Mary's just finished a six-game home stand where the Gaels went 5-1. Pacific has beaten Pepperdine and Santa Clara in conference play, while losing to Saint Mary's twice.

Trent Plaisted finished with a double-double, 23 points and 10 rebounds, to go along with two steals in a 95-77 loss to Nanterre last Tuesday. 

Lee Cummard had a near double-double with 22 points and nine rebounds in a one-point loss to Oostende, while Jonathan Tavernari and Charles Abouo each scored 12 points in their wins last week.

On Portland beating Gonzaga:

"I think our guys are in a pretty good mindset right now as far as their preparation, but I think that's part of the process is try to go through any team and who they've played, where they've played and the big games they won, because that can get the attention of your players."

The four-way logjam for second place in the West Coast Conference was halved last week as BYU defeated San Francisco and Pepperdine lost to Gonzaga. The result is Saint Mary's and BYU sitting one game behind the Bulldogs. BYU has its chance to pull even with Gonzaga in the loss column on Saturday night in Spokane, Wash. Fifth-place Pepperdine travels to third-place Saint Mary's on Thursday in another game that would have top of the standing implications.

Lee Cummard went for 18 points, seven rebounds and two assists in an 85-75 victory over Brussels last Sunday. He was also 5 of 7 from the field and 2 of 2 from beyond the arc. 

Trent Plaisted added 14 points in a nine-point win against Cantu, while Jonathan Tavernari finished with 12 points and four rebounds in a 95-77 loss. 

Brandon Davies also contributed nine points and four rebounds in a loss to the Miami Heat in 16 minutes of play.

"Eric is feeling better. He practiced a little bit yesteday and today he was in practice full time, so unless he has a setback tonight, we anticipate a good practice tomorrow and that he'll play on Thursday. That's what we're hoping."

Haws named Lou Henson

BOSTON, Mass. – BYU junior guard Tyler Haws has been named the Lou Henson Award National Player of the Week.

The 6-foot-5 junior averaged 33.0 points in two wins last week. On Thursday, Jan. 9, Haws scored 35 points in a win over Pepperdine. Two days later the Utah native had 31 points, including 24 in the second half, in the Cougars' win over Loyola Marymount.

The Lou Henson Award is presented annually to the top Mid-Major player in Division I college basketball.

Sacramento Kings guard Jimmer Fredette went for 11 points and three assists in a 108-83 win against the Orlando Magic last Friday. He also added 13 points and three assists in a 124-80 victory over the Cleveland Cavaliers last Sunday. 

Fredette is now shooting 50 percent from beyond the arc this season and averaged 14.3 minutes per game last week.
