The first quarter was highlighted by a 68-yard rush from quarterback Taysom Hill to give BYU a 10-7 lead to end the first quarter. The rush tied his previous school record (Hawai’i, 2012) for the longest run by a BYU quarterback.

Last season, the BYU defensive unit was considered by some to be one of the best in the program's history. It's tough to argue with that fact, seeing how the defense finished 2012 ranked No. 3 nationally in total defense, finishing behind only Alabama and Florida State. The Cougars held oppenents to an average of 266.1 yards per game, the lowest since 1974 when the defense held opposing offenses to an average of 261 yards. Cougar fans enjoyed a fun evening on Wednesday at LaVell Edwards Stadium. The BYU Athletic Department hosted the Fan Stadium Party on Wednesday just days before the football team's first home game of the season on Saturday against the nationally ranked Texas Longhorns.  

Fireside in Virginia

Before playing their first game of the season, members of the BYU football team and staff participated in a fireside at a church in Charlottesville, Va., in front of a capacity audience of local church members, visiting Cougar fans and others from the community.

Game day information vs. Virginia

The 2013 BYU football season launches Saturday at Virginia at 3:30 p.m. EDT.

Fans can begin their game day experience with Countdown to Kickoff with Alema Harrington, Brian Logan, David Nixon and Andy Boyce on BYUtv at 12:30 p.m. MDT. Dave McCann and Blaine Fowler will report live from Charlottesville, Va., during the show.

The game will be aired on ESPNU and streamed on WatchESPN, after which fans can tune in for the BYUtv Sports Post Game presented by Larry H. Miller.

Kyle Van Noy was named to USA TODAY Sports Preseason All-America team by Paul Myerberg, his fourth preseason All-America nomination to date.

Ross Apo named to The Earl Campbell Watch List

The first annual Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award Watch List was announced and BYU wide receiver Ross Apo was included among the 35 honorees.

Apo, a junior from Arlington, Texas, was on the 2012 Phil Steele All-Independent Second Team. He started all 12 games he played in 2012 and caught 31 passes for 311 yards and one touchdown. Standing at 6-foot-3, Apo recorded two of the three longest receptions on the team in 2012 (43, 53 yards).
