Day 2: Prague and match vs. Brno

On their second day in Europe, the Cougars did some sight seeing and played their first match against a foreign opponent.

The team took a walking tour of Prague, which including visiting a church, climbing a tower and seeing the changing of the guard at the president's house.

Monday evening the team competed against the Brno club team, winning 3-2 (21-25, 25-18, 25-17, 19-25, 23-21) after a tough fifth set. Volejbal Brno led 14-12 in the fifth set, but the Cougars bounced back for the 23-21 fifth-set victory.

Day 1: Travel to Prague

The team reached Prague Sunday after a long couple days of travel. One of their layovers was in Amsterdam, where they were able to see a little of the city before their last flight to Prague.

Three Cougars named to U.S. Men's National Team

Three former Cougars have been selected to the 22-player U.S. Men’s National Team preliminary roster for the 2014 FIVB World League.

Outside hitter Taylor Sander, who was named AVCA National Player of the Year April 30 for his senior season performance, is one of three college players named to the team. He is joined by middle blockers Futi Tavana, who played at BYU from 2009-12, and Russell Holmes, who played for the Cougars from 2004-2008. Holmes competed with the Olympic team in 2012.

BYU men's volleyball headed to the Joseph J. Gentile Arena in the morning for early practice and a prematch press conference. Coach Chris McGown and players Taylor Sander and Devin Young addressed the media before watching film on their opponent, Stanford. Read the press conference transcript.

Chicago: Day 1

After a day filled with travel to Chicago, the BYU men's volleyball team arrived at its hotel near the campus of Loyola University Chicago. Players streamed the NCAA tournament play-in matches from their phones during the travel period. The Cougars will begin tomorrow with practice and a press conference at the Joseph J. Gentile Arena in preparation for their NCAA tournament semifinal match on Thursday at 7 p.m. EDT.

Hatch named finalist for Off the Block/Springbak Blocker of the Year

BYU middle blocker Michael Hatch was named one of three finalists for Off the Block/Springbak National Blocker of the Year on BYU Sports Nation Wednesday. The winner of the award will be announced Tuesday.

Hatch leads the No. 4 Cougars with 1.34 blocks per set, good for No. 4 nationally. 

The voting committee for this award was comprised of more than 20 college men’s volleyball head coaches and volleyball reporters from around the nation.

U.S. Men's Junior National Team opens play

The U.S. Men's Junior National Team (MJNT) opened play at the FIVB Volleyball Men's U21 World Championship with a 3-1 (25-11, 25-18, 27-29, 25-14) win over Rwanda in Pool C, on Thursday in Izmir, Turkey.

BYU opposite Ben Patch scored 15 points on 12 kills, one block and two aces.

The United States (1-0) will play Serbia on Friday, Aug. 23, at 10 a.m. EDT.

Sander leads Team USA to win over Dominican Republic

Senior BYU sensation Taylor Sander led the United States as it held off the Dominican Republic to win its first pool play match of the men's Pan American Cup, 26-24, 25-14, 22-25, 21-25, 15-7 on Monday in Mexico City.

Sander, an outside hitter from Huntington Beach, Calif., led the United States' effort with 19 points on 15 kills, three blocks and one ace. Middle blocker Jacek Ratajczak (Warsaw, Poland) added 14 points on eight kills, three blocks and a match-high three aces.

Mike Wall named U.S. Men's Assistant Coach

USA Volleyball annonced the hire of former Cougar Mike Wall as an assistant coach for the U.S. Men's National Volleyball Team.

Wall played college volleyball at BYU where he was an opposite from 1997-2002 and led the Cougars to two NCAA National Championship squads. In 2001 and 2002, Wall was named an AVCA First Team All-American. After beating UCLA in three sets to take the 2002 NCAA championship, Wall was named the Final Four MVP and BYU's Most Competitive Athlete.

Former Cougar wins World Series of Beach Volleyball

Former BYU volleyball player Casey Patterson and teammate Jake Gibb turned heads in the World Series of Beach Volleyball championship match in Long Beach, Calif., Sunday, coming away with a 22-20, 21-11 victory over Aleksandrs Samoilovs and Janis Smedins of Latvia.

The duos previously faced each other in the FIVB final in May in Argentina where the Latvians swept Patterson and Gibb, but the former Cougar and his partner most recently topped their opponent in straight sets earlier this month in Switzerland.
