BYU preps for Texas

BYU women's volleyball began the day studying film on Friday's opponent Texas. After a study hall, the Cougars traveled to the unfamiliar Gregory Gym for the first time. Head coach Heather Olmstead as well as Amy Boswell, Whitney Young Howard and Mary Lake joined the media for a press conference before practice began.

No. 13 seed BYU women's volleyball traveled to Austin, Texas, Wednesday to prepare for its regional semifinal match against No. 4 seed Texas on Friday. The Cougars left the Smith Fieldhouse in the morning to catch their flight at the Salt Lake City International Airport. The team spent most of the flight and evening time working on homework and studying for finals. Following a bus ride into town, the squad checked into its hotel for the night.

BYU defeats Weber State 77-66

BYU made the first two baskets of the second half before the Wildcats sparked a 10-0 run to cut the deficit to three. Yoeli Childs put the Cougars back in action with a jump shot as BYU led 43-38 with 15:57 to go. The Cougars went cold from the field as Weber State tied the game 47-47 on a 3-pointer with 12:28 left in the game. BYU answered with a 6-2 run to build momentum and retake a 53-49 lead. BYU led by as many as 13 before sealing the game 77-66.

BYU got off to a hot start with a 7-0 run before the Wildcats scored the next seven points. An Eric Mika jump shot gave the Cougars a 16-14 advantage with 13:13 on the clock. Kyle Davis made a layup and free-throw for a 27-22 lead. Yoeli Childs hit a jump shot as the Cougars led 31-24 with 6:10 left.

BYU pulls out ahead in 77-63 win over USU

After Utah State cut BYU’s six-point halftime lead to four, 37-33, Eric Mika made 1-of-2 from the charity stripe to make it 38-33. A key block from Mika swung the momentum in BYU’s favor with 17:08 on the clock, setting up a 15-7 Cougar run.

Utah State claimed the first points of the matchup and led BYU until TJ Haws drove to the basket and found the first Cougar points, shortening the Aggies’ lead, 5-2. Senior LJ Rose contributed two free throws and shortly after fed Eric Mika with an over-the-shoulder pass which was converted into a dunk, giving the Cougars a 6-5 lead.

BYU defeats USU in final regular season game, 28-10

BYU’s strong offensive push seals the win over USU, 28-10.

After Hill left the field in the first minute of the fourth quarter, Tanner Mangum entered for his first time of the game.  

Mangum threw a 5-yard touchdown pass to Colby Pearson at the 12:55 mark of the quarter lengthening the Cougars lead 28-10 to USU.

BYU carries its lead over the Aggies, 21-10

BYU extends its lead over Utah State in the third quarter, 21-10.

Hill threw a 10-yard touchdown pass to Mitchell Juergens with 2:20 left in the third quarter, bringing the Cougars to an 11-point lead over Utah State, 21-10. This marked Hill’s 75th career combined touchdown.

At the 1:28 mark, Fred Warner caught BYU’s first interception of the game at the USU 40 for a gain of two yards.
