BYU prepares for Long Beach State

BYU men's volleyball took to Rec Hall for its first practice at the foreign Penn State gym Wednesday morning. Following an intense hour and a half practice, Ben Patch, Brenden Sander, Jake Langlois and head coach Shawn Olmstead participated in a press conference for the media.

BYU men's volleyball took to the court early Tuesday morning for one final practice at the Smith Fieldhouse before traveling to Penn State. The team then took a charter flight from Provo, Utah, direct to the University Park Airport, with a pit-stop for gas in Des Moines, Iowa. After dinner, the Cougars returned to their hotel to mentally prepare for practice on Wednesday.

New book by former Cougar Brock Richardson

Former BYU defensive lineman Brock Richardson (2007-08) recently published a book entitled Latter-day Warriors — Stepping Into Your Spiritual Strength. Currently a seminary teacher for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Richardson interviewed several formal BYU football players and their wives to learn what it takes to become physically and spiritually strong.

CONGRATULATIONS: Trent Pratt was named assistant coach of the year at the Y Awards last month.

MISSIONARY NEWS: Jackson Cluff received his mission call to Atlanta, Georgia, reporting to the MTC the day after the College World Series ; Bryan Call has his mission papers in process. Word is Danny Gelalich and Easton Walker may soon be processing missionary papers.

BYU defeats Creighton 88-82 in NIT quarterfinals

BYU opened the second half with three layups in two minutes, giving them a 44-39 lead.

After two lead changes within a minute, the Cougars extended their lead to five on two layups by Kyle Davis, giving them a 52-47 advantage with 14 minutes to play. Nick Emery extended their lead to eight on a three-point play, 54-47.

BYU leads Creighton 38-37 at halftime of NIT quarterfinals

BYU or Creighton didn't put up a basket until the 17:53 mark, when Creighton hit two 3-pointers to go up 6-0. Corbin Kaufusi scored the first five points of the game for the Cougars, but a layup from the Blue Jays gave them an early 8-5 advantage with 15 minutes to play.

Two Creighton 3-pointers and a Nick Emery 3-pointer took the score to 15-9 with 13 minutes to play.

Fischer leads BYU to 80-77 win over Virginia Tech

The Cougars didn’t score a field goal until the 18:32 mark  in the second half when Chase Fischer got things rolling for the team, scoring a layup to push the lead to 42-38. After gaining early momentum, BYU was scoreless for two and a half minutes and did not score a field goal for five minutes. Finally ending the streak, a 3-pointer from Zac Seljaas put the Cougars up 50-47 with 12:33 on the clock.

Both teams got off to a slow start with the first point being scored at the charity stripe by Kyle Davis with 18:17 on the clock. Back-to-back threes from Chase Fischer and Nick Emery sparked the offense, getting them up from 7-0 with 17:20 to play in the half.

Out of the break, BYU struggled to get something going. UAB went on a 9-1 run to close in on the 58-47 lead. After making five 3-pointers in the first half, the Blazers made were 5 of 7 from beyond the arc in just the first eight minutes of the second half.

Zac Seljaas sparked some life into the Cougars’ offense with a three at the 15:02 mark to push the lead back to double-digits, 61-50. However, sharp shooting from UAB brought the lead back to single digits, getting the lead down to 65-61 with under 12 minutes to play.

The Cougars got to work fast in the first half with Kyle Davis scoring five quick points, including a 3-pointer at the 19:16 mark. Back-to-back threes from Chase Fischer pushed BYU on a 9-0 run, making it 11-2 with 17:03 left in the half.
