Thornock's goal makes it on WCC's Top Plays

Another week and another goal making it to No. 2 on the West Coast Conference's top play countdown. This time it's Jaiden Thornock's goal which made it 2-0 against Weber State. The goal helped BYU advance to face Colorado in the second round of the NCAA tournament on Thursday at 2:30 p.m. MT.

The mailbag returns for its second installment, this time with one question and a long answer.

Kevin from Tallahassee, Fla., asks:

Some media pointed out that Creighton’s Doug McDermott averaged more points than minutes for a little while early this season. Any Cougars accomplished this even on a game-by-game basis?

After going through this year’s four games and all of last season, 11 different times BYU players either scored more points than they played minutes or were within one point for every minute played.

Now that BYU women's soccer has made it to Tallahassee, Fla., for the second and hopefully third rounds of the NCAA tournament, let's take a look at how the rest of our region is looking.

At the other host site in Lincoln, Neb., the No. 2 seed Huskers are playing Boston College in their second round matchup on Friday. Nebraska won both the Big Ten regular season title and the conference tournament. Boston College finished sixth in the ACC behind the four No. 1 seeds and Notre Dame. ACC teams haven't lost yet in the tournament.

The Cougars all agreed that crashing the boards will be a key to winning on Wednesday night against the No. 21 Iowa State Cyclones.

"I think we're going to be able to rebound with them and handle them on the boards, but they're a very good rebounding team," Matt Carlino said. "We're going to have to really work at it and that's going to be a huge point of emphasis for us." 

Cougars in the Pros: Plaisted finishes with eight points and 10 rebounds in win

Trent Plaisted finished with eight points, 10 rebounds and one assist in a one-point victory against Cimberio VA last Wednesday. 

Sixers forward Brandon Davies averaged 12.75 minutes last week and scored four points and grabbed eight rebounds in a loss to the New Orleans Pelicans last Saturday.

Collinsworth earns player of the week honors

While Kyle Collinsworth was not named player of the week by the West Coast Conference office, College Sports Madness did take notice in naming him their WCC Player of the Week on Nov. 17. Collinsworth led BYU to a 3-0 record this week with wins over Stanford (112-103), Mount St. Mary’s (108-76) and Colorado Mesa (84-60). He averaged 14.0 points, 7.7 rebounds, 6.3 assists and 2.7 steals while shooting .483 from the field and .600 from three.

The Cougars put the game away in the second half behind sophomore Kyle Collinsworth and junior Nate Austin.

In the second half, Collinsworth led the way with 10 points, four assists and four rebounds, while Austin contributed eight rebounds.

BYU leads Colorado Mesa at half, 36-28

Freshman Frank Bartley IV and juniors Matt Carlino and Anson Winder led the Cougars to a 36-28 half time lead.

Carlino made a jumper at the end of the half to extend the BYU lead to eight as he scored eight points and had two assists in the half. Winder chipped in with six points and three rebounds while Bartley added six points.
