This week BYU was named the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl National Team of the Week after its 40-21 victory over then No. 15 Texas at LaVell Edwards Stadium.

United Way Day of Caring

On Thursday, Sept. 12, the BYU athletic department joined the rest of the BYU campus in the Utah County United Way Day of Caring by supporting numerous service projects throughout the community. University employees were given four hours off work to support the United Way’s efforts to strengthen the local community.

With all of this week's rankings out, the Cougars have inched up in eight different polls and rankings. While BYU started the season at No. 6 in the NSCAA poll, they were in the 10-12 range in other polls. Now they have moved into the top 10 in each of the rankings with a high of fifth in the Soccer America poll and a low of ninth in the Bennett Rankings. The Cougars were also slotted in as a No. 2 seed in bracket projections by CollegeSportsMadness.com. Last week's ESPNW Power Rankings also put the Cougars 12th just behind Penn State and WCC foe Portland.

Rushing for a school-record 550 yards, BYU held tight in the fourth quarter to beat No. 15 Texas 40-21.

The Cougars were led by quarterback Taysom Hill, who ended the game with the second most rushing yards by an NCAA quarterback in the last 10 years with 259.

With a 34-yard rush from running back Jamaal Williams on its last drive, BYU broke the single-game rushing record in school history and took a 40-21 lead into the fourth. The previous record was 465 yards against Montana in 1958. The 485 rushing yards BYU picked up are also the most Texas has allowed in school history.

BYU entered halftime with a 27-14 lead over Texas with quarterback Taysom Hill leading the way. Hill continued to run past Texas in the second quarter, outgaining the Longhorns in rushing yards 166 - 59 in the half. His 166 rushing yards are a career-high and are the most in a game by a quarterback since Brandon Doman in 2001 (164 yards).
