BYU trails UCLA 10-0 at halftime

UCLA opened up the scoring with a 6-yard touchdown pass with 12:50 remaining in the first half. 

With 8:51 left in the second quarter, the Bruins picked off Taysom Hill and took possession on BYU's 39-yard line to set up a 24-yard field goal. On the very last play of the second quarter, UCLA blocked a Jake Oldroyd field goal attempt from 55 yards.

After one quarter of play, BYU and UCLA remained tied 0-0. 

Jamaal Williams had one reception for 39 yards, BYU's longest reception of the year, while totaling 47 yards of offense. Butch Pau'u led the Cougars on defense with six tackles while Fred Warner added three tackles and an interception, his first of the season and the sixth by the BYU defense this year.

BYU faces UCLA in the home opener at LaVell Edwards Stadium today at 8:15 p.m. MDT.

Gymnastics team runs Y Mountain

BYU gymnastics ran up Y Mountain as part of a symbolic team activity Saturday morning. 

Head coach Guard Young and strength and conditioning coach Josh Morzelewski motivated the gymnasts to run up the mountain. Along the way, the gymnasts’ assistant coaches, academic support, nutritionist and team psychologist were there to offer bottled water and encouragement. The coaches’ families also came to cheer on the girls.

PROVO, Utah – The Cougars made big jumps again in the rankings entering their fourth week of play, and they backed it up with two wins.

New polls came out in the first few days of the week, and BYU was ranked No. 7 by the NSCAA, No. 9 by Hero Sports and No. 15 by Top Drawer Soccer.

BYU goes for its second win of the season today against in-state rival Utah in Salt Lake City at 5:30 p.m. MDT.

The game will be televised nationally on Fox. Those with mobile devices can also download the Fox Sports Go app to watch the game.

Additionally, live television coverage on BYUtv will begin at 4:30 p.m. MDT with the one-hour pregame show, Countdown to Kickoff. Live postgame coverage on BYUtv will follow after the game.

BYU played the San Diego State Aztecs back when dinosaurs were still alive. It was a long time ago. I was about 12.

Pau'u earns Madness Independent Defensive Player of the Week honors

Sophomore linebacker Butch Pau’u was named College Sports Madness Independent Defensive Player of the Week on Tuesday after his strong performance in the win over Arizona on Saturday.

In his first career start, Pau’u had nine total tackles, seven of which were solo tackles. He also had 2.5 tackles for loss, one sack and one forced fumble, all of which were the first of his career.

PROVO, Utah – A win at No. 5 Penn State gave BYU confidence headed into its third week of the regular season. That showed as the Cougars erupted for five goals in a home win against Tennessee.
