Dean was rated the No. 1 outfielder in California by Perfect Game, hitting .355 (OBP .441) with five home runs and 25 RBI last season at Poway High School. He also had nine doubles and 13 stolen bases.
"Kyle is a tremendous baseball player and has received many accolades for his performance on the field," BYU coach Mike Littlewood said. "That being said, he is even a better person off the field and will be a great fit here at BYU."
Dean is currently in the middle of his senior campaign at Rancho Bernardo High School, a perennial California powerhouse coached by Sam Blalock.
“I’m so excited to sign with BYU,” Dean said. “I think highly of Coach Littlewood, his staff and the support of Tom Holmoe and Brian Santiago towards the team. BYU is a rising program and I want to be along for that.”
Dean played in the prestigious Area Code games in 2014 and 2015 with the Milwaukee Brewers. In 2014 Dean was San Diego County CIF First Team and a California All-State selection. In 2013 he was on the USA Baseball 17U National All-Development Team and selected a Max Preps All-Sophomore First Team member. In 2012 he was a member of the USA Baseball 15U National Team. He has played for the Baltimore Orioles, New York Yankees and the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim Elite Scout teams.
"I can't tell you how excited we are that Kyle has decided to attend BYU," Littlewood said, "The athletic administration, our coaching staff, and our players are so happy to have a player and person of Kyle's caliber join our baseball family."
Dean was also recruited by Cal-Berkeley, Oregon, LSU, Texas, San Diego State, UCLA, Arizona, Virginia, Arkansas, North Carolina and the University of San Diego.
Dean plans to play for the Anchorage Pilots in Alaska this summer.
"We expect Kyle to have a huge impact on our program next season and I can't wait to get him on Miller Field and start coaching him," Littlewood said. "We all appreciate Kyle and his family putting their trust in us as coaches to develop Kyle to the best of our abilities athletically, academically and socially here at BYU."
