Voice Quality: Voice tone, clarity, and projection. Ability to lead a crowd.
Showmanship: Enthusiasm, sharpness of motions, crowd appeal.
Coordination: Ability to perform skills exactly as taught with smooth precise motions, natural ability, and rhythm.
Appearance: Personal grooming, neatness, and physical appearance. The judges' may consider height, weight, and body composition in choosing new squad members.
ATTIRE: Dress modestly yet appropriately for cheerleading tryout clinics (IE. tight fitting t-shirts with biker shorts under cheer shorts for the ladies, and t-shirts with athletic shorts for the gentlemen). Tank tops or tops which reveal the mid-section are not permitted. Additionally, clothing worn at tryouts must be clear of team names, logos, or anything else used to influence the judges. Attire for friday evening session and Saturday morning session is as follows: FEMALES - a tight fitting SOLID colored t-shirt with biker shorts under solid colored cheer shorts with cheer tennis shoes. MALES - solid colored t-shirt with athletic shorts and tennis shoes. Immodest or inappropriate attire will have a negative effect on your score.
WHITE SQUAD FEMALES:
Running Tumbling: Ability, Technique, Execution, Difficulty - minimum requirement is a round off back handspring.
Standing Tumbling & Jumps: Ability, Technique, Flexibility and Height in toe touch, Execution, Difficulty - minimum requirement is a clean toe touch and seperately a standing back handspring.
Dance: Timing, Rhythm, Coordination, Showmanship, Execution including body placement and precision, Memory under pressure. The dance will be taught at the tryout clinic. The fight song may also be taught and evaluated sometime during the tryout process.
Cheer: Projection, Motions, Crowd Leadership and ability to interact with the crowd, Execution, Confidence, Correct arm angles, Hand positions, Sharpness, standing tuck may be substituted with standing back handspring, and liberty butterfly stunt may be substituted with an extension. The cheer will be taught at the tryout clinic.
Partner Stunt: Ability, Basic Technique, Potential, Safety, Execution, Flexibility, Tight Form. The POTENTIAL for you to learn the more advanced stunts as evaluated by the judges is an important factor. - This is one or two optional stunts performed AFTER the first cuts. A toss hands to extension is the minimum requirement. You may be asked to perform a heel stretch full down with ALL the males trying out during the final cuts.

Cheer: Projection, Motion Placement, Crowd Leadership and ability to interact with the crowd, Execution, POTENTIAL. Standing tuck may be substituted with a jump, and liberty butterfly stunt may be substituted with a hands to extension. The cheer will be taught at the tryout clinic.
Partner Stunt: Ability, Technique, Strength, Safety in stunting and spotting, Execution, Coordination. The POTENTIAL for you to learn the more advanced stunts as evaluated by the judges is an important factor. This is one or two optional stunts performed AFTER the first cuts. A toss hands to extension is the minimum requirement.

BLUE SQUAD FEMALES:
Running Tumbling: Ability, Technique, Execution, Difficulty - minimum requirement is a round off back handspring back tuck. Layouts, Fulls, whips, and passes with multiple elements are scored higher.
Standing Tumbling & Jumps: Ability, Technique, Flexibility and Height in toe touch, Execution, Difficulty - minimum requirement is a standing toe touch back tuck. Multiple jumps ending in a back tuck are scored higher.
Dance: Timing, Rhythm, Coordination, Showmanship, Execution including body placement and precision, Memory under pressure. The dance will be taught at the tryout clinic. The fight song may also be taught and evaluated sometime during the tryout process.

The ability for the majority of the men trying out to stunt EASILY with you is an important factor. - This is one or two optional stunts performed AFTER the first cuts. A heel stretch full down is the minimum requirement. (A more advanced stunt in flexibility and twisting may be substituted for the heel stretch full down.) Possible stunts may also include: arabesque, scorpion, Nike or scale, Bow and Arrow with double downs from extended stunts, full ups, rewinds, etc. You may be asked to perform a heel stretch full down with ALL the males trying out during the final cuts.

Cosmo has become a very athletic icon of BYU. ESPN was quoted as saying, "He [Cosmo] is probably the most athletic mascot at the university level."
