BYU’s 21 athletic teams consistently rank among the best in the nation. The past ten years have brought numerous successes in Cougar athletics. BYU teams have finished their respective seasons ranked in the nation’s top 25 on 96 occasions and in the nation’s top 10 on 40 different occasions. During that span, BYU averages 10 top-25 finishes and 3.4 top-10 finishes each year. BYU has also produced six national champions in the last decade.
In the ten-year history of the Mountain West Conference, the Cougars have won 118 of 296 conference championships. That is 40 percent of all championships, by far the most of any school in the Mountain West. In 2000-2001, BYU won all but three conference championships (16 of 19). BYU also dominated the Western Athletic Conference from 1962-1999, winning more championships than any other WAC school. In fact, during the last three decades in the WAC, the Cougars won 60 percent of the WAC Championships. For the sixth-straight season, BYU teams claimed at least eight MWC Championships in 2008-09.

FOOTBALL For the third consecutive season BYU finished ranked in the nation’s top 25. The Cougars have won at least 10 games the last three seasons and only five teams in the country have won more games than BYU over that span. In 2008, BYU football had seven Cougars named All-American.
MEN'S BASKETBALL In 2008-09, the Cougars secured their third-consecutive MWC regular-season title and earned their 24th appearance at the NCAA Tournament as a No. 8 seed. The Cougars also finished the regular season ranked in the nation’s top 25 for the second consecutive season.
CROSS COUNTRY In fall 2008 the BYU men earned a ninth-place finish at the NCAA National Championships and secured their 11th MWC title in the last 12 years. BYU’s women’s team owns four cross country national titles (1997, 1999, 2001, 2002).
SOFTBALL After claiming their third MWC Championship in the last five years, BYU softball earned their fifth-straight NCAA Tournament appearance in 2009. BYU softball has had nine consecutive winning seasons and five consecutive 40-win seasons.
SOCCER After capturing their second consecutive MWC championship, the Cougars made their 11th appearance in the NCAA Tournament in 12 years, nearly knocking off defending national champion USC in double overtime in the NCAA second round.
TRACK AND FIELD Winning both men’s and women’s MWC indoor and outdoor championships, BYU’s track and field teams were simply dominant in 2009. BYU had three national champions at their respective events. The women finished 3rd and 15th at the indoor and outdoor NCAA Championships while the men finished 13th at the outdoor NCAA Championships.
MEN'S VOLLEYBALL For the second straight season BYU finished ranked in the nation’s top 10. With nearly all of BYU’s starters returning in 2010, the Cougars look ready to make another final four. BYU has won three national titles (1999, 2001, 2004).
WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL BYU volleyball is 11th all-time in NCAA tournament victories. BYU’s most recent NCAA tournament success came in 2007 when they reached the Elite Eight and finished the season with a No. 12 national ranking. BYU has won 23 conference volleyball titles.
