In the 2009-10 season, the BYU women’s basketball team swept the series against Utah, beating the Utes on their home court 69-52 before taking them down at the Marriott Center 54-37. The wins were BYU’s first sweep of the series since the 2001-02 season.
The first game of the series proved a career night for Haley Hall, who’d sat out most of the three previous seasons due to ACL injuries. In her first stand against the Utes, Hall recorded 24 points, including six 3-pointers, four assists and nine rebounds. Hall shot 69 percent from the field and 67 percent from the 3-point line.
Despite the Utes’ All-American player Kaylee Whipple’s 16 points, Cougar defense held the Utes to shooting only 32 percent and 25 for 3-pointers.
Hall led the Cougars again when the rivalry showdown moved to Provo, putting 13 points on the board for the Cougars and getting six rebounds. Hall was joined in double-digit scoring by Mindy Bonham with 12 points and Jazmine Foreman with 11.
The defense turned the pressure up even higher, holding the Utes to 28 percent shooting and 15 percent from the 3-point line.
With four returning starters, including Hall, the Cougars look for another strong showing in the Deseret First Duel in 2010-11.
