Castleberry Tosses Complete Game Win

PROVO -- Redshirt freshman Nelson Castleberry led BYU to a 7-1 victory as he pitched a complete game Tuesday night against Kansas State.

The Spanish Fork righthander threw 142 pitches in his longest outing as a Cougar. Castleberry pitched in a start before was five innings against Portland last month for no decision. Castleberry, now 2-2, had nine strikeouts and allowed only four hits in the win.

"Nelson (Castleberry) looked strong tonight," BYU coach Vance Law said. "He had good command and everything seemed to be working for him. It is a big help to our pitching staff to start off this home stand with a strong performance from our starting pitcher tonight."

BYU improved as a team to 8-10 on the season, while K-State fell to 7-10. The loss on the mound went to A.J. Morris for the Wildcats.

BYU was led by Sean McNaughton on the offensive side of the game as he was the only Cougar with four hits which included two doubles and three runs. Five different Cougars recorded RBIs in the win.

The first inning started off fast for both teams offensively as they both scored. The Wildcats had their first base runner when Jordan Cruz stepped to bat as the second batter and doubled to the right-center gap. Cruz scored when the next batter grounded out to shortstop to put K-State up 1-0.

The Cougars wasted no time though as they gained the lead in the bottom of the frame. McNaughton started things off with a double that landed on the warning track in left field and was knocked in by the next batter, Dan Vargas, who had a double of his own, that hugged the third base line.

Kent Walton hit a sac fly to deep right field that scored Vargas and put the Cougars up 2-1 early. BYU never gave up that lead.

The Cougars recorded their third run of the game in the bottom of the second when Andrew Law had a ground out that scored Jonathan Cluff. BYU next got on the board in the seventh inning as the Cougars notched three more runs. Two of those seventh inning runs came from RBI by Kasey Ko and Bryce Ayoso and the other run came on a wild pitch.

BYU tacked on one last run in the eighth inning with an RBI double by Vargas that scored McNaughton. The Cougars ended the night with 15 hits.

"Everyone throughout our whole line up contributed to the win for us tonight," Law added. "Sean (McNaughton) and Dan (Vargas) did a great job for us at the start of our line up as they got on base and kept things moving for us."

BYU will be back in action Wednesday at noon against K-State at Larry H. Miller Field.
